skymama 37 #1 November 16, 2005 I think I'm going to have about 25 beer drinkers, who drink as well as skydivers, at a party. To be the most cost efficient, should I get a keg or buy bottles? Any pros or cons with going either way? If a keg is the way to go, where do you order one of those and what kind of beer would please the most people? She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

Superman32 0 #4 November 16, 2005 Keg beer is tasty, don't let anybody tell you otherwise. You also tend to drink more out of a keg than bottles ... less carbonation P.S. Skymama, if you get a keg, I think it's part of hostess duties to take a keg stand, and post all the videos and photos God, don't you miss college Inveniam Viam aut Faciam I'm back biatches! ccowden 0 #5 November 16, 2005 A keg can be a pain in the ass. Picking it up, deposits, taking it back.... Plus, then you are stuck with one beer choice. With bottles, you can grab them anywhere and just recycle or throw them out how you choose. You can get a few different kinds and if you have some left over, it won't go to waste. Bottles. Ask a couple people who are coming what they like and get some ideas for kinds. If you miss on the keg, you screw up royal.

lawrocket 3 #8 November 16, 2005 Skymama: I think that a keg is the best way to go. First, it's a lot cheaper. You can get a 1/2 barrel keg (15 gallons) of domestic megabrew for $60-$90, depending on the brand. Or, you can get a 1/4 barrel (7.5 gallons) pony keg for 50 bucks. Added to this are a deposit for the keg and tap, and rental on the tap. Note that the total of these costs for deposit and rental is less than the deposit for all the beer bottles you'd buy. Think of how many bottles of beer 7.5 gallons is. You're looking at at least $150 in bottled beer for that. Also, kegs are cleaner - it''s a lot easier to dispose of those stackable plastic cups than all those beer bottles. Even better, the guest can have as many beers out of that one cup as he wants - you can get by with 30-50 cups, which may cost you a whopping 2 or three bucks, less than the damned deposits on the bottles. You also want to get a trashcan and some ice to store the keg. Another thing - you may want to settle on a pony keg. Typically, people will stay until the beer runs out. With the 1/4 barrel, the beer should last a good 2 or hours after the real drinking begins (which usually starts about an hour or two after the scheduled start time). So if your party starts at 7, the beer will last till about 11:00. If a beer run fr additional beer is needed, someone can then go pick up bottles or even another keg (the pony keg costs about the same as two 30 packs of beer, anyway). The best part? Keg beer tastes better than bottled or canned beer. For future use, I'd recommend a kegerator. It's one of the best buys I ever made. My wife is hotter than your wife. yardhippie 0 #10 November 16, 2005 Enough bottle to keep 25 skydivers occupied is going to be a lot of glass. You'd better order a dumpster! but seriously, my friends and I used to always keep keg beer around. In fact at SDA, one guy has a kegerator for just that reason. the trick is the pressure. Too little: no flow and foam. Too much: lots of foam. We had a resturant style set up with CO2 and a cooling plate and everything. Worked great, but its a bit of an investment, and you have to set it all up. Id go with the keg, but I already have one to trade in for deposit, and I know exactly what I need to make it work. Or like spence said, keep em away from the pump! This is my point. For 25 people, who are adults and not college kids looking to save every penny and calculate every ounce of beer, bottles are the way to go. But if you want to go through all the crap in theabove post, then have at it. From experience, if I am having 25 people over, I am buying a few different kinds of beer and not going through the hassle of the keg just to save a few bucks. Plus, all that calculating is great, but if you don't drink every ounce of the keg, you will have NO idea how much you really spent per ounce, if any at all. AND you will end up with a half full keg that you have to take back.

OK, if I go with bottles, what is a good assortment; a light beer, normal beer, dark beer? There's a downside there, too. The stuff people like the most is gonna run out, which means people will drink the other stuff that isn't as good. Sure, you've got a variety of beer that is slowly dwindled into no more variety. You've spent more money, and people are gonna keep asking, "Is there any more Coors Light?" Look - the best beer in the world is free beer. When I've got a bunch of guests over, I go for Coors Light because it goes down easy and people have a good time with it. I personally don't like Coors Light much, but that doesn't matter after the first one. It's an easy choice. Any complaints about a lack of variety become mooted after 10 minutes. Trust me on this. People don't care what they're drinking if they are having a good time. I don't. And I'm as much of a beer snob as you'll find. My wife is hotter than your wife. tigra 0 #14 November 16, 2005 Keg beer is a recipe for a hangover, plus many of my friends are beer snobs (myself included) so if it were me, I'd go with bottles. I'd get some domestic "swill" for my friends who are beer "anti-snobs", maybe some light beer too (also domestic, some people like that stuff- go figure!) then a few 12 packs of different imports. Heineken, Corona, Becks? Or you can go more interesting and try a few ales or even some microbrews. Any "leftovers" will keep and if you don't want or need beer in your house, you can load it all into a cooler and take it to the dz.
