So, Harry Potter. The director of this one did Mona Lisa Smile. :| So, here's hoping he learned from his mistakes.

He did it for the money. He is a great director (Pushing Tin (a fave), Enchated April (chick flix, but good CF, and Four Weddings & FUNeral. I mean, c'mon, the script for MLSmile was so junky and clunky. I've seen that movie 101 times before.

What do y'all think of the new Dumbledore? I'm not sure anyone could have matched Richard Harris. [:/]

Michael Gambon is no Richard Harris, but he a great actor. (check out The Cook, The Theif, His Wife, and Her Lover or Layercake) He is one of my absolute faves and knowing him, he won't try to be Harris, who could be? It will be interesting to see what he does with that.

That's a great idea. I made the mistake of re-reading book 1 right before the movie and the movie irritated me.

UGH....did the same thing with The Sheltering Sky. Who woulda thought Bernardo Bertolluci could have fucked up a movie so majorly. :(

This is the same guy who made the Conformist and Last Tango in Paris for chrissakes! *heavy sigh*[:/]

I find very few movies made from my favorite books "measure up" because a good book makes me SEE the characters and the story in my mind. More often than not, the movie is a let down. BUT, if I see a movie before I read the book, I can often enjoy both. Still, I've enjoyed all of the Harry Potter films so far simply because they are so wonderfully cast and acted. I don't think they could have found anyone better to play most of the main characters!

I totally agree. So far, the casting has been superb. It really sucks when your imagination's character and the movie actor are too different to reconcile... but that hasn't happened once in this series (not that I can remember off the top of my head...)

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

Exactly. Luckily there have been a decent number of new characters since the first book, so I've got to enjoy "creating" those characters in my mind.

Rita Skeeter always looked kinda like Jennifer Tilly in my head. I've always found her rather annoying and faintly 'evil', a la Cruella... but she's not a Brit, so she would never have been cast...

Did you not see Prisoner of Azkaban? He played Dubledore for that one too.

I guess he was so good, you did not even notice. ;)
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

I always end up making seeing the characters as real life versions of the cartoon sketches in the books anyway. I think it would be convenient to have a picture and mannerisms to associate with what you're reading. As long as the movie is done well, and in this case, they generally are.

Seriously, W.T.F. mate?

Ooh, I hate that. And it's virtually impossible to NOT visualize the actors. [:/]

Totally agree......except in the case of The Remains of The Day. And it was so weird, because I only saw previews and then read the book. I can honestly say that the casting was great.

Granted, I am well aware that this is more the EXCEPTION to the rule. :)
