Stephen King books made into movies

Recommended Posts

Since we have a SK thread about his books, how about a thread about his books adapted into movies?

So... your thoughts on what movies turned out great and what movies bombed?

The best ones that I remember has to be:

It
Misery
The Green Mile
Carrie
The Shining
Cujo

Forgettable movies made:

The Langoliers
Maximum Overdrive
The Running Man

More forgetable crap fests:
The Stand
Sometimes they come back I & II
the Lawnmower Man
Graveyard Shift
Needful Things
Firestarter

The best adaptation IMO is The Shining, Kubricks a genius and JN is the best actor of the modern generation. Shawshank, Misery and Carrie were all VERY good too. Kathy Bates is one scary lady, I mean seriously, she hobble dthat guy with a SLEDGEHAMMER! OUCH. If I remember correctly in th ebook she lops his feet off with an axe and blow torches the stubs. Yikes.

we are all forgetting the best movie he made. IMO better than the story.

The Shawshank Redemption.

I hadn't realized SK wrote the story.... well I hadn't kept up with his books after the mid 90's... It is a great movie.

I wonder if they will ever make a movie series out of the Dark Tower books, a-la Lord Of The Rings Trilogy?

Stand By Me made in 1986 was based on Stephen King's short story The Body. It was a very good book and a very good film, which is rare.

Stand By Me was one of the good ones!
Have any of you seen Apt Pupil? The short story was wickedly twisted. It was much more disturbing than the movie. I thought the movie was made pretty well though.
I think his best were Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
When SK wrote The Green Mile he released it bit by bit in monthly installments so that's how I read it. It was kind of cool. Now it's just one book.

Delores Claiborn was pretty damn good too as well as Misery. Remember that scene where she hobbles him? Ouch!

I'm going to disagree with The Shining. The book shows a man gradually losing his mind, struggling to hang on to his humanity and his sanity. You could see where he was essentially a good man with a troubled past at the beginning and the book was as much about his deterioration as the ghosts that haunted the hotel. Jack Nicholson played the part as a psycho from start to finish- he played an excellent scary psycho, but that's not what the book was about!

I thought Kathy Bates made Misery- if not for her, the movie would have fallen short. It was a long time before I could see her in anything else and not think of Misery!

'hobble' is a funny word

so is 'spulunking'

A 7 series movie of books that do not have the popularity of Harry Potter? Doubt it. Onyl in mini series form and that would be teh suck

Shawshank was written as a novella in 1982 and included in Different Seasons....called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

No way. I though Nicholson did a fantastic job of going from normal hard working average Joe with a weird job to flat out lunatic. In fact King hated Kubricks version of the Shining because it focused too much on the mental collapse of jack rather than the ghostly stuff. Did you see the version of THe Shining that King did for TV? Yeah, that guy from Wings was soooo much better than Jack Nicholson All of Kubricks movies have that underlying theme of people being pushed beyond their mental limits and how they respond to it. Sometimes inorder to make a good movie yu have to deviate from the source material. Given Stanly Kubriks resume I think he should be allowed a little leeway to explore the characters in his fasion, not be bound to a book thats a low B at best.

Totally disagree- I thought Jack Nicholson was over the top from the very beginning. I never once saw him as a caring husband and father trying to make up for his past and do right by his family which was the whole premise for them being there! Not to worry though, I'm probably one of the few people on the planet who feels that way!

Carrie is one of the worst films i've ever seen :|

I'm sorry to hear that. Man, you must be verrry selective. I've seen LOTS of MUCH MUCH worse movies - in fact, I thought Carrie was pretty damn good.

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

There was a recent Carrie remake. Any thoughts on that one?

Thats fine, individual thought is more important than anything else. Thats why movies are so fun, they're completely subjective. I hated Good Will Hunting, but when I tell people, they act like I'm a motard with Jello for brains. I love almost everything Kubrik did (except Barry Lyndon,w hat a crapfest, that Brian DiPalma "make it look good screw the story" style has to GO) and teh Shining was always one of my favorites. I think I'm going to have to re-read the book, its been so long since I did, I can't remember most of it.

didn't they make a movie of the dark half?

either i imagined that they did or timothy hutton played the lead....

Yes they did. I remember that one. Thought it was pretty good too. Kind of reminded me of The Birds, but with a more sinister tone...
