Lindercles 0 #1 November 22, 2005 http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/internet/11/22/email.scam.ap/index.html Someone's been sending viruses via email pretending to be the FBI and the CIA. I've gotten two already. I'm relatively computer savy and I almost fell for it (frankly, who doesn't do a couple of illegal things online these days?). If you get one of these, DELETE DELETE DELETE
AlexCrowley 0 #2 November 23, 2005 Urm. If the FBI and CIA want to speak to me they're not going to do it via email. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

Lindercles 0 #4 November 23, 2005 the emails say that they've logged your IP on some illegal websites and that they want you to answer some questions which are in the attached file. of course, the file is an exe, which should be a giant red flag for most people

RhondaLea 4 #6 November 23, 2005 Quotehttp://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/02/22/tech/main675800.shtml It seems to be a repeat of a 9 month old scam. My boss got one in the mail yesterday and nearly drove me crazy. I was like, "WTF? What part of 'if you don't know the sender, delete it' don't you understand?" Fortunately, he has been trained not to open attachments unless he asks first, but good grief! rlIf you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. freeflir29 0 #7 November 23, 2005 Yeah............in my two years as a Federal Law Enforcement Agent I never thought of interviewing a subject via email. If the FBI or anyone else was monitoring your email they would NOT tell you about it.
meridianjumper 0 #8 November 23, 2005 Actually I have been seeing more and more of these types of emails being sent out. It seems that they have an attachment that is normally a zip file. In that zip file there is a jpg type file that is actually an application. Do not run this. It seems that this file has the virus Sober.X in it. Sober.X is a new virus that has been out for only a week or so. It infects your system and starts up its own e-mail sending program in the background. It then goes out and looks for email addresses in your document files and even .pst outlook files. It them mails itself out to all the addresses that it could find. masterrig 1 #11 November 23, 2005 I got one of those and judt deleted it. The FBI, CIA or any other law enforcement agency is not going to question, interrogate or interview anyone via the internet. There's another virus going around under the guise of Microsoft. Ya' gotta really watch what you open in your e-mail. Chuck
yardhippie 0 #12 November 23, 2005 if I dont know who its from: no open if the subject line looks fishy from someone I know AND theres an attachment: no open if its a .zip file and I wasnt expecting it: no open I have to pretty strict about what I open, especially since our company email is extremely filtered, and I used gmail, etc for personal stuff. I dont want to be the one infecting the system! A lot of people will open and forward anything. In your position, that would be total chaos to 'ruin' the company's computers. Chuck
