skyflyingbecca 0 #1 November 26, 2005 Hey guys, anyone have an idea for a topic for a persuasive speech? It has to be 5-7 mins long, and something I feel passionately about. I can't figure out how to turn skydiving into something I could persuade someone about... Maybe why not to skydive? That could work...? I don't want to give it on "why you should skydive" I think that would be lame, and I already did an informative speech on skydiving and wingsuits physics. I have the kind of personality that I don't preach to people, I feel passionately about all those hot speaker's corner topics, but just as passionately believe we shouldn't "persuade" each other about anything, let everyone have their own opinions, you know? What should I do? Anyone have any topic ideas for me? Posts or PM's welcome, ok well I'm begging actually, I have to give the speech 8am monday morning Ack! I keep wishing it will just go away! Thanks for anything, brainstorm away! "I know it's friday night, but come on. Surely there's something better to do than yell at people on the internet?" - Tom A. Thanks for anything, brainstorm away! Euthanasia Abortion The War on Drugs The War on Terrorism The war in Iraq The death penalty Illegal immigrants Religion Medical research on animals Recreational drugs Vegetarianism Any racial topic The real fun is in starting with a topic that tends to get people really, really upset. Then take the unpopular view. For example, let's say you are in a class that has a lot of hispanics. Do a speech on why illegal immigration is bad and why the US should have a "shoot to kill" policy. Your actual beliefs are pretty much irrelevant. The idea is to start out with the majority of your audience against you. I mean *really* against you. The goal is not necessarily to get them to agree with you, but to force them to get past their own gut reactions and argue intelligently and, in that arena, to have a very difficult time countering your position. With the right topic, you could force people out of the intellectual arena and into the emotional arena. Anyway, have fun with it. Get people incredibly pissed off and take them to someplace that will surprise them. By the way, I'd recommend you post this question in Speakers Corner. squirrel 0 #7 November 26, 2005 well, you could open your speech about skydiving being safe by using this tidbit of info i used in a video opening..."Between 1983 and 1986, it is estimated that there were 75 deaths per year related to lawn tractors, riding lawn mowers, and garden equipment." this is according to the consumer product safety comission, found it using a google search. compare this to an average of 26 deaths per year related to skydiving. what would you rather do on a sunday afternoon? ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him? QuoteThe following google gave loads of hits.....clicky - some may help you Ah, yes, the google search, of course QuoteI did mine on "Partying" ...... Got an A on it but even the 60 year old teacher said "It's not THAT hard to persuade people to party" Actually, I stumbled on an article about how Hemp got outlawed in the first place. Amazing story, it was a conspiracy by DuPont and some other powerful families who had a lot of money to lose if it stayed legal and a LOT of money to make if it was outlawed. A great story I think I'll post eventually. Anyway, I think it's a bad idea because the class knows I'm a FF and it wouldn't be good for the "public image" QuoteRSL vs No RSL Cypress vs No Cypress Ah, I like that one Quotewhat would you rather do on a sunday afternoon? Damn I need to write that stat down somewhere - good one! Looks like the topic is going to be "What has been done in the name of religion" i.e. killing and negative stuff like that. It should be an interesting topic with a lot of history linked to current events. Thanks so much for all your input! You guys always come through! "I know it's friday night, but come on.
