Does America Online suck as much as I think it does?

Recommended Posts

My father has AOL dial-up (:S) and I've been told that he has trouble accessing some things on the web. And recently my boss was visiting his parents & I tried to email him something. And he found that he could not access his email from work, and that when he used his dad's AOL account, he could not open the Microsoft Office documents I sent him.

Is there something f&*ked up about AOL, or what?

So I have cable, but my dad still uses dial-up (b/c he's a cheapskate & a luddite:P) Before I got cable, I had a dial-up with PeoplePC Online, and I didn't seem to have as many issues as my Dad does.

I was going to give him my old puter, maybe I should just re-install PeoplePC Online for him.

In 1985 I got tired of ISPs going out of business and having to change e-mail addresses every time it happened. When AOL started I hated it for the simple reason it allowed the great unwashed to easily connect to the net which lowered the bar of discourse in a major way. It also furthered the advance of the web going commercial which is cool if you're looking to buy something, but a pain when you aren't.

If you are computer savvy enough to set it up right (many think AOL "is" the internet) it's fine. It's always there and I've been with them for 10 years now without any problems. It's a bit more pricy than others but I use it both ways, dial-up and cable modem, and I'm happy with it.

My only gripe may be you can't use a third party email or newsgroup reader, but I've become used to the e-mail thing, and Google works good enough for newsgroups.

The fellow having problems opening a word doc is just going about it wrong. It's probably just not having doc files associated with the right program.

I'd rather give my money to small and local ISP, but I've never found one that matches AOL for reliability.

My cable company has never let me down - been with them for 7 years now. I hope cable gets to those little areas of the country soon so people can really see how bad AOL is.

My grandmother on the other hand has AOL and is constantly calling me asking why her internet won't work... granted, she's an 81 year old woman with limited experience with computers, but her concerns are valid. For living in the boston area (an obvious major metropolis) she has limited availability for dial-up numbers, and it astounds me that she pays more than $20 for dial up when I pay $30 for my cable.

YES!!!! It not only sucks like a regular sucking, but it sucks to the tenth power. When I use the word 'sucks' here, I mean both definitions. The damn thing will suck the life out of everything else on your 'puter.>:(

Why do you think they are always giving it away for free?

You mean 1995?? Kinda hard to find ISP`s in 85.;)

Back in the mid to late 80`s I had a Q-Link Account (Q-Link went on to become AOL in the early 90`s). In those days Q-Link was the Biggest online Community going and catered to C-64 users.

I was banned for life from Q-Link about 2 days after I got set up. Never went back to Q-Link, PC-Link or any other Incarnation that later became AOL.

AOL has always SUCKED and Will Always Suck.

If you don't mind, I will take this a step further.

They have absolutely no possible or remote chance of ever not sucking. It is simply a done deal.

In other news, Clinton is no longer President.

When you can get DSL from the phone company for $15/mo, there's just no reason to accept AOL as an option.

If the changing email addresses (esp for those cable users) drives you batty, get a gmail account or register your own domain. It's not that expensive for doing mail, and if your provider sucks, you can move it to another.
