Do you smoke and when did you start?

Recommended Posts

I'm very surprised by the number of skydivers that smoke.
I find it very odd, that these people for the most part are relatively intelligent, educated, and physically fit or at least somewhat active.

I smoked for 16 years, had a lung collapse and damn near died so I quit smoking and started skydiving and BASE. It's a lot safer.

I'm in the never smoked category, have been a runner since birth, so it didn't mesh. I did have a whole bunch of smoker friends growing up though, and for a couple years I'd go around asking them why they decided to start smoking. The main response back was that they didn't really remember why they decided to start, at least not a reason they wanted to fess up to.

Tell us how you REALLY feel! :P

I smoked about 30 cigarettes a day before I quit about 3 years ago. But I still miss them. So I have one or two a month to stave off the desire to start up full time again. (For the record, I do not consider someone a "smoker" unless it's a daily habit.)

I still remember why I started (curiosity/they made me feel yummy) and why I quit (the side-effects were a bitch).

I've been smoking since I was 10 years old. Being the youngest of 9 kids, I had a LOT of bad influences. I've quit for a while here and there over the years, but never managed to stay quit.

Right now I am working on quitting once and for all. I'm building up my will power at the moment, and realize that this will be the hardest thing in the world. I didn't smoke all day yesterday.

The thing that will make it easy for me, is the constant reminder of what it's like to die of lung cancer, which is unfortunately right in front of my eyes. It's ugly.

Well, the poll options pretty much summarize his views.

I've never been a smoker ... I have probably smoked the equivalent of a pack or two over my whole life in the "have a few drinks bum a smoke off a friend" routine. And not for 6 or 7 years now. I think I'm very fortunate in that it really does not a damn thing for me, so I really don't get the hype and don't have to deal with the addiction/cravings.

Thanks to my mom, I never ever wanted to smoke. She made it as repulsive as it could be. Years of suffering through the damn second-hand smoke did it for me. After some 35 to 40 years of smoking, she's been 5 years smoke-free! B|

Thats whats great about a free society, the individuals choice to do what they will with their body.Let me guess you are pro-life, right? Apparantly it bothers you that somebody is doing something with themselves that you dont agree with so they are obviously wrong. I recently quit smoking (two weeks, not even a puff) but arrogant non-smokers that think they have the right to regulat epersonal behaivor in others might just drive me into a 2 pack aday spiteful smoking spree. If you want to climb down off your high horse you might see that the people that smoke are still intelligent and educated, they just make a choice thats different from you, you might have to learn to respect other peoples choices.

I find it amusing that you think most skydivers are intelligent and educated. :P

BTW, I voted as a smoker (started before skydiving), since I just quit 15 days ago. Maybe in a year if I'm still not smoking, I'll feel confident that I've kicked the habit. I feel good about it this time, though. :)
Edit: forgot the tongue face thingy after the first statement. It looked pretty harsh without it. :D

I quit one year ago Nov 1. After a crazy ass boogie.
I had smoked for 14 years. God that sounds like a long time, i rarely even want one now, but I have days when the cravings are bad.

Actually, I'm one of those Bush hatin' liberal types and yeap I'm from the northeast too.

I couldn't give a twirling F as to what you as an individual do or do not do.
I think that smoking is stupid, ugly, dirty, stinky and expensive. That's why I don't smoke.

I just found that skydivers as a group seem to smoke a lot more than the average population (at least around me).
