What the heck is EMO?

Recommended Posts

No seriously what is it? Sounds like whining to me with a goth twist. The goths I knew never wanted to commit suicide. This is a very strange trend upon our younger generation.

emo = sucks.

Which is why you should have believed this the first time. :D

Rebecca you know me... I've got to experiment and see for myself.

Death Cab for Cutie? I've heard that name before.. think it was 4am on MTV. Was a catchy tune, I thought it a bit whiney.. it's on that Barsuk radio. [:/] Please don't tell me this EMO shit is going main stream?

Yeah, but they're printing money at this point. A friend of mine has been their "business guy" for years (evening/weekend stuff for him in addition to his regular job). Pretty soon the label will be big enough to support him full time.

Of course, we can hope it'll go the way of the last big "Seattle music trend.":D

(chorus)
hey, hey, my, my
rock and roll will never die
hang your hair down in your eye
you'll make a million dollars

well i was in this band goin' nowhere fast
we sent out demos but everybody passed
so one day we finally took the plunge
moved out to seattle to play some grunge
washington state that is
space needle
eddie vedder
mudhoney

now to fit in fast we wear flannel shirts
we turn our amps up until it hurts
we've got bad attitudes and what's more
when we play we stare straight down at the floor
wowee
pretty scary
how pensive
how totally alternative

now to fit in on the seattle scene
you've gotta do somethin' they ain't never seen
so thinkin' up a gimmick one day
we decided to be the only band that wouldn't play a note
under any circumstances
silence
music's original alternative
root's grunge

well we spread the word through the underground
that we were the hottest new thing in town
the record guy came out to see us one day
and just like always we didn't play
it knocked him out
he said he loved our work
he said he loved our work but he wasn't sure if he could sell a record
with nothing on it
i said tell 'em we're from seattle
he advanced us two and a half million dollars

(chorus)

well they made us do a video but that wasn't tough
'cuz we just filmed ourselves smashin' stuff
it was kinda weird 'cuz there was no music
but mtv said they'd love to use it

the kids went wild, the kids went nuts
rolling stone gave us a five-star review said we played with guts
we're scorin' chicks, takin' drugs
then we got asked to play mtv unplugged
you should have seen it
we went right out there and refused to do acoustical versions of the
electrical songs we had refused to record in the first place
then we smashed our shit

well we blew 'em away at the grammy's show
by refusing to play and refusing to go
and then just when we thought fame would last forever
along come this band that wasn't even together
now that's alternative
now that's alternative to alternative
i feel stupid
and contagious

well our band got dropped and that ain't funny
'cuz we're all hooked on drugs but we're outta money
so the other day i called up the band
i said boys i've taken all i can
shave off your goatees
pack the van
we're goin' back to athens

That's hilarious!!

I have a sinking feeling EMO has caught on main stream. [:/] Maybe it'll dethrone hip-hop \ rap.

Oh crap They Might be Giants!? Jeez I like emo? Can't be!

Bands that I didn't know were emo and listen to:

Thursday, My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds to Mars

Please anyone who actually knows more about it correct me if I'm wrong

Like anything other "label", it is debatable, and often is debated heavily by pseudo music geeks.

Many of these music geeks would say that the bands you listed are not emo, that true emo is more along the lines of Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi, or Cursive.

If you ask me? I will defer my answer to a quote by the Mars Volta, regarding music labels.

"We are really tired of those labels and questions," says guitarist, co-founder and producer Rodriguez-Lopez. "Concept album? How can any huge project that takes up most of your life for a year not have a concept? Prog? How can any innovative, forward-thinking art or music not be progressive? It reminds me of when I first heard the label "Emo," which was the most ridiculous label ever. How can anything you put your heart and soul into not be emotional?"

Even after I just got done saying labels are debatable, I can say with confidence that is not true.

You're probably right - I honestly have not gone through and looked at everything that's on Barsuk. I just recall when my friend was trying to explain what the label was all about, he mentioned emo a lot.

Last reply, I promise.

Also, if you know the bands featured in this game (or maybe even if you don't), The Emogame is hilarious. I played it a long time ago; apparently there are a bunch of sequels on the site now. I have only played version 1, but it has Aerosmith in it and is very funny (again, this coming from someone who knows all the bands... I guess jokes like those making fun of Tim and Connor for being lushes just aren't as funny if you haven't seen these bands play).

Some boys at my kid's schools have been wearing black eyeliner and my daughter had to explain the whole emo thing to me. When she told me emo standed for emotional, I asked her if that meant the boys were distraught and they are secretly crying out for help. She looked at me like I was crazy and told me I'm SO out of it.

Emo has been around for years. Alot of what is out nowadays and is popular is considered some type of emo. Personally, i with go with the notions of those who have already said it: labels are crap. I like the music I like and don't go searching for particular genres. Some emo is good (ala is sound like your more know "rock") and some sucks....like any "genre".

If I hear a band that I like, I buy their album. I don't ask, does this fit into my pigeonhole of the genres I like?
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

I was asking what it was and what's with all the goth like makeup. The youth now seem to be taking it a step further with the talk of suicide and really getting messed up.

Not trying to pigeonhole any music. I'm just not sure about this new genre that's making it main stream being called "emo".

Have you ever heard of a generation (in the past several decades at least) where popular music wasn't misunderstood and vilified by adults? The comments about suicide, often made even by emo kids themselves, are an attempt to poke fun at those poking fun at them. Sort of intentionally repeated misconceptions for the sake of humor.

Kids will always kill themselves no matter what they're listening to.

Several years ago at Roy Ray Airport, we had our own version of the EMO song.
Our Cessna 182 pilot Lantz Pohlman was the ring leader. he used to gather the girls around and sing to them,
"Give me an E"
"E" the girls would respond.
"Give me an M" Lantz would reply
"M" the girls would chorus
"Give me an O" Lantz would call
"O" the girls retort.
"What's that spell?" Lantz would singingly question
"EMO" the ladies would collectivly repond
"What's that mean?"
"EAT ME OUT" these girls would eagerly repond, and then they would put their fingers in thier mouths, stretch their mouth apart and thrust out their tongues and wiggle the tongues about in a provocative manner.

It was fun then but I have trouble now days getting young girls interested in the EMO song.

I certainly like my version better, at least I can understand it!
I don't care how many skydives you've got,
until you stepped into complete darkness at
800' wearing 95 lbs of equipment and 42 lbs
of parachute, son you are still a leg!

From what I see...Goth kids tend towards more industrial than emo...at least at the clubs I have been to. Hell there is even a sub genre call "goth". Most of the goths I knew in High School were into NIN, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, etc. Not so much into stuff akin to The Getup Kids ( an "emo" band). And this "emo" has been in the mainstream for a few years now.

Kids have been listening to music and talking about suicide for years. or anarchy, or killing or...whatever. its very circular.

me thinks you are showing your age. :P
