If the movie was as good as some people say, I wonder why I don't remember it... I remember Apocalypse Now and Deer Hunter... Did Coming Home bomb at the box office or something?

good question. It is certainly a much "smaller", more intimate film. Again, Ashby wanted to show what was going on at home and how the war affected people no matter what they believed. It's definitely worth a look. Some might say that besides being a great period piece, it may still be relevant.

It's domestic gross was $33 million ...in 1978, so no it didn't bomb.
As someone mentioned, it was a difficult movie. It laid open emotions concerning the effects of the war. The infidelity was difficult also (personal issue, I suppose).
It was a beautifully done movie, but, no, you didn't leave the theater all light hearted and gay.

It also didn't come back again and again, so people under about 45 won't have been exposed to endless repeats of it.
It was well done. Didn't dis the veterans at all, just the sadness of the situation. Warning, though -- it had Jane Fonda in it, so discussion of the cast probably belongs in SC

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

No doubt.
I think 'American President' is a most delightful, funny romantic comedy. My brother cannot see past the issue of gun control and trashes the movie thoroughly ...absolutely cannot see the light hearted, witty interplay between Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. All he can see is "another damn piece of gun control propoganda".
I have no doubt some will dismiss the movie with 'Hanoi Jane' in it as utter shite.

I seriously don't think "Coming Home" is a chick flick. It may look like it on paper, but it is a rough ride. It's also one of the first films showing the effects of war while deciding not to show the war itself.
great movie....Hal Ashby is the man.
