goodnplentygirl 0 #1 December 5, 2005 One of the tax accountants at my work swears to me that under the American's with Disabilities Act, people who are under 5'2'' (62 inches) are exempt from paying sales tax on a vehicle. I am 5'1'' and need to buy a new car, and it would be very cool if I could save some $$$, but I can't find any documentation to back this claim up. She said she first heard about it while taking defensive driving. I'm not very good at searching things on the internet, and I've looked everywhere I can think of, but I cant find anything. Does anyone know anything about this? my body, my choice
gemini 0 #2 December 5, 2005 Ummhhh....ADA is a federal law, but sales taxes are state laws. I seriously doubt if the feds have gone that far yet! Blue skies, Jim

BillyVance 35 #4 December 5, 2005 I've never heard of lack of height being a disability... However, in Alabama, state law allows disabled people a tax break on car purchases. I've never paid sales tax on my cars.... goodnplentygirl 0 #5 December 5, 2005 Yeah, I have no clue. I mean, 5'2'' is short but not THAT short. I think lack of height would be a disability if you were really short, like 3 feet tall. But not 5'2''. The thought of saving money was just really nice since I dont have much to begin with. my body, my choice

Lindercles 0 #7 December 5, 2005 well, you don't have to pay the sales tax to the state, but you do have to pay it to an independent agency whose sole job is to convert it to nickels and make special shoes out of them so you can reach the pedals. goodnplentygirl 0 #8 December 5, 2005 In Austin, TX.... I asker her about it again, and she said that both times she took defensive driving they talked about it, and swore it was true. She said she was going to search it for me, so we'll see.... my body, my choice

goodnplentygirl 0 #12 December 5, 2005 She said that all she could find was that the State of Texas offers a tax exemption on motor vehicle sales (152.086) for orthopedically disabled individuals. She said that unfortunately, as is usually the case in the tax code, there is no concrete definition of what constitutes an orthopedic disability. She sent in a request for information to the State because she said she has to know if it’s true or if her defensive driving instructor was just full of shit. I will let you know what she says when (IF) she gets a response. my body, my choice

Just tell him to buy you a car or you will be taking his truck to work everyday. Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.
goodnplentygirl 0 #22 December 6, 2005 Hey it sounded good to me!! Besides, I dont think I will need to buy a car, because Jason LOVES driving me to and picking me up from work everyday!!!!! It's like I have my own personal (and very handsome I might add) chauffeur! Although, he is a bit cranky in the mornings :) Some people just arent very chipper at 7 am! Edited to add: Shut up Kevin, you know you love me!
