MySpace for the old people!

Recommended Posts

OK, I had been keeping away from the MySpace site forever because I thought that it would be mostly for young kids or for horny people looking for romance or worse. :D Still, I researched the website one day. Wow...interesting!

This site could be used as a way to network or to come together with other like-minded people, and it can also be used as a common ground to find new creativity. There are many artists on there, and some are quite decent. (Young people have such creativity!) Also, there are many people who have formed groups of similar interest. There are even some skydiving groups on there.

Anyway, I thought that I'd fill out a basic profile and maybe eventually include some artwork, sketches, graphics on my page. I would like to meet with local artists, every so often, since I've been out of the underground art/design scene for a while now. I hadn't intended on finding many of my friends or old design contacts on there, since most of my good friends or ex co-workers are my age or older. My generation didn't exactly grow up sitting in front of a computer. It's truly the young ones, who are changing the way that we communicate, nowadays.

Still...last night, I finally told my friends, who are not on MySpace, about my page. Out of nowhere, I found a very good long lost friend of mine with whom I went to middle-school and high school. This girl is one of the funniest people that I have ever met in my life. (She's like Margaret Cho on crack!) I'm so glad that I've found her, again!

i am now thinking that MySpace is really a cool little spot on the internet highway. Soooo...all of you thirty years and older people out there, sign up on MySpace. Please don't let me be the oldest person on there by myself! :P

Are there any other cool experiences in finding old friends on there (or here) that anyone wants to share? Any horror stories? :D

:D

I'm 34, and no, I don't think that I'm old. To a teenager, I may seem ancient, though. :P

(Btw, yes. :D)

Teenagers and MTV think we're in the grave. [:/] The real sad part is most teenagers have a larger disposable income then we do in our 30s. :|

I moved to Texas from Michigan 2 years ago, and lost touch with a lot of friends. But since joining myspace, I have gotten in touch with so many of them! My best friend from jr. high even found me! I lost touch with him when I was a freshman in high school, and saw him once right before I started college, but that was it. It was like he dissapeared right off the face of the earth! We we so close and it was sad to lose contact with him. And I found out he had been living in Corpus Christi up until this past year! So we were only a few hours away from eachother!

But he said he was curious to see if I was on myspace, and searched through like, a million Alicia's until he found me. Even weirder though, he had an ex-girlfriend who went to the same high school as me, but was 2 years ahead of me, whose younger sister was in my grade. And I was looking at her myspace page, and one of her friends had a picture of skydiving, so I clicked on it. And I saw that it was her younger sister! She jumps at Techumseh, which is the dz my parents jumped at before they moved here! I thought that was so cool!

Small world isn't it?

Edited to add: I'm not sure if she is on DZ.com ever, but if she is i'd like to say hi! I saw a pic of her with Chrissay on her page, maybe you know if she has a dz.com name??? I just dont want to come off as a weirdo or anything lol, I just think its so cool that we went to the same high school (i think, i know her sister went to my high school), never crossed paths, but both are skydivers now!

my body, my choice

That's wonderful! Also, I have no idea who you are talking about, but perhaps this person will see your post and send you a PM. Good luck! :)

Hey sweetie, I love you and will support you with most things, but I cannot get onto my space. My 23 year old daughter is on it and she would just die if her 50 year old mom got on it :$. You are much younger than me, 34 is not too old for my space, but unfortunately I think 50 is :P. But for you and what you are using it for is great. I think it will be a good resource for you.

well if it's any consolation, i'm 25 and if i saw ya on myspace i wouldn't freak, the only reason i would freak if i say my 51 year old parents on there is becasue my mom can barely turn on the computer let alone set up myspace....

does it freak her out that you go to a web site where the main topicsome times is sex?...lol... i know my mom would freak out if she knew all what we discussed here on dz.com..lol...

LOL. That is so funny and you are so right. There is probably way more sex discussed on dz.com than on my space....but then my family doesn't read the dz.com threads :S

I have sent your mum all of your previous posts by mail.

She should have fun reading them for a few days:P

Amazing how you can get addresses off of White pages. ;);)

That's exactly how I felt about it at first! I thought to myself that couldn't get on this site with all of these twenty-something year olds...:S Still, you don't have to click on to anyone's page that you don't want to, Evelyn. It's for you and YOUR group or circle of friends. Most of us that hang out together in the Bombshelter with Nicky, Gia, etc. are in our thirties and forties, right? I'm trying to see if we can get on MySpace to chat there, instead of always chatting here. :P

Can you say "sweeping generalization"? ;)

That may well be true, in your socio-economic group.
Guess what? Your (our) socio-economic group represents a small minority
compared to the general population.
Very small.

Most teenagers (worldwide) have far less than we did at our most poor.
