larsrulz 0 #33 November 22, 2004 QuoteI'm surprised the wake turbulence didn't collapse their canopy There are a couple reasons this didn't happen: a) It was going fast; the slower a plane, the larger the vortices. b) It wasn't very heavy; the heavier a plane, the larger the vortices. c) Trailing vortices (wake turbulence) occur at the wing tips and move straight down, so as long as the jumper didn't move over to the flight path of the fighter, then he wouldn't have come in contact with the vorticity downwash. Had he been that close to a 747 coming in to land, then he certainly could have been effected at that distance, but collapse from a small aircraft is very, very unlikely unless you actually get in its wake. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

Douva 0 #42 November 23, 2004 I seem to recall being told they were actually trying to get that shot with the Southwest jet in the background. Kong 0 #43 November 23, 2004 Bill Parsons took the Southwest pic, gave me a copy for my wall. Bill told me that the jumpers did not see the plane. He is still running around Dallas/Ft Worth somewhere???
Levin 0 #44 November 23, 2004 that's a cool pic. old looking though. doesn't look like anybody noticed the jet but the camera guy. actually i was talking about spotting loads at the DZ and watching out for jets. if ya don't see one from the door below ya, you may still get to see one above ya under canopy. lots of big jet traffic there but they seem to have it figured out. close calls seem to be pretty rare. i remember one that made the newspaper about 5 years ago. their caravan came arounda cloud and flew within 500' horizontal of an airliner. the newspaper called it a near miss. dorbie 0 #45 November 24, 2004 Recently when I was jumping at Skydive Dallas, DFW approach was from another direction most of the time but if the weather forced DFW approach anywhere near the DZ then ATC imposed a ceiling on the drop planes. It keeps you under their traffic, but you get out at 9000 instead of 13500. usedtajump 1 #46 December 8, 2005 Douva, there never was an intent to get the Southwest aircraft in the shot. All we were trying to do was to get a picture of a round with the ball of Reunion Tower centered in the middle, the aircraft was a lucky accident. That's me in the lower right hand "5 o'clock" position, white jumpsuit with the Wonderhog container. Along with an original of the picture under discussion, I still have two others in the series, the one Upindownshop refered to and one after the aircraft departed the area. In the picture with the aircraft in it, you can see that it is just starting a right turn to the west and he continued turning west to get out of the area. At the time, I was a dispatcher for a jet charter airline and one of our clients was Herb Kellerher, CEO of Southwest. I gave him a copy of the photo shortly after it happened and he was truly amazed. A friend, who worked for Southwest as a captain at the time, told me Herb had a large mural of the photo made for his office wall. Oh yeah Upndownshop, Diane Senkow used to refer to Bob's loft, "The Upndown Shop" as the "Down and Out Shop". The older I get the less I care who I piss off. How is Diane? Do you know where she is? That jet shot will be around forever wont it? Am i correct that there is another shot that is actually closer?
