Recommended Posts

Just curious who here are runners and a little about you if you are.

Copy and paste the questions for your answers.

How long have you been running? Over 12 years, with the degree of seriousness changing from time to time.

Do you run competitively or just for health? 3 to 5 races a year. Most 10k. I usually run to train, but I love the way it makes me feel and the health benefits from it.

What is your favorite distance? I like the 10k distance as a race and middle of the road for training.

How many miles a week do you average? 15-20 right now, but much higher when training.

What shoes do you run in? Asics Gel Cumulus. Love 'em! I like the DS Trainers too.

I LOVE to run! One of my favorite things to do, but it can be hard work and probably don't look as if I am "enjoying" myself when I am running. But hard work is rewarding and can be enjoyable wheter it looks like it or not, especially how you feel after doing it and the benefits you get from it.

How do you stay motivated? I get into running every now and again and keep it up for a couple of months max, then I get bored.

Even in the short time I keep it up I can see the results (in distance/speed I can cover ground & also body weight - burns up fat well good) but I just cant keep at it. I would run every other night about 3/4 miles a time

Not a runner myself. I worked an ambulance standby for the "Enviro Chip" (whatever that means) running event in Death Valley last saturday. I believe it was a 10k, 1/2 marathon and full marathon event. Just like to say that man, runners are definately a "different" bunch of folks. Made for an interesting day.

I go through times where I do lose motivation, and that's when I take a step back. I think the key is to keep it fun. Don't start running with too many goals or preset distances or times. Just go for a "jog" and go at whatever pace you feel comfortable at. Look at it more as a chance to get out and enjoy the outdoors instead of just exercise or a way to lose weight or get in shape. I also find that reading Runner's World magazine helps. They have alot of good articles for motivation, training ad Q&A.

Take it slow and enjoy your time running. I think it is when people view it as "Ah crap! I have to go exercise!" is when they have issues.

Yeah, I pick it up and I will build myself up to around 20 miles a week and then I slack off and don't run at all. I hate running in the cold. My sister in law runs all the time, she has a treadmill and she has ran in many marathons around the South. She talked me into running a half marathon in New Orleans, but since New Orleans isn't the healthiest place right now... well, anyway, I'm not running right now. A treadmill would be nice or wait, a move to Florida where I could run more due to warmer weather... yeah, I like that idea better.

I like running because it really sheds the pounds. I can eat whatever I want and nothing sticks to me (when running). It helps with the stress level too. I get out on that track and I'm just in a zone.

I like to run in New Balance. I had a pair that I had for awhile, I don't remember the number on them, but they were light and felt like I had nothing on my feet. I lost them in Houston at mudfest.

Ran competitively for 6 years in jr high and high school.

Now I've been jogging here and there for the past 6 years or so.

I don't have a favorite distance. Sometimes I like sprints, but I lean more to longer runs 3+ miles.

In high school when I was running hard I'd log between 40-60 miles a week depending on the time of season.

I 'm a Saucony man myself. I've had several pairs.

The main reason I don't run much anymore is because of my knees. Between wrestling and running they just didn't hold up that well. Now most of my time is spent on an erg or a bike when the weather is nice out. Less impact on the body so I can still push hard.

How long have you been running? Since junior high track--10 years off and on. Mostly on, lately, but the last couple years of high school and first year of college, you couldn't have paid me enough to do a 5k.

Do you run competitively or just for health? I race every once in a while, but to improve my own time, not to compete against others. I mostly just run because it's addictive and it makes me feel good.

What is your favorite distance? 5 and 10K, but nothing beats that last mile of a marathon. B|

How many miles a week do you average? Around 20, more if I'm training.

What shoes do you run in? Asics GT 2100. I highly reccomend them if you overpronate! Can't live without 'em!

How come you runners NEVER look like you are enjoying yourselves while running?

Because we enjoy pushing ourselves, and the more you push yourself while you're running, the better you feel at the end of the run! And we "never" look like we're enjoying ourselves?? I beg to differ! (See attached!)

I would love to start running seriously but at the moment my feet just won't let me. Everytime I've tried running over the last couple years my right foot swells up after a couple of days and stays like it for weeksB|. I've been told I should see a doctor to find out if I've got uneven feet or something.

Anyway what I really love for exercise at the moment is cycling. Where I live there are evil hills round every corner, hell to climb but so, so rewarding:)

How long have you been running? Started seriously in 1992 with my first 10 k and level of commitment varies depending on life.

Do you run competitively or just for health? BOTH! I've run a marathon, several 10k's and a bunch of 5k's. I just like how I feel when I run regularly.

What is your favorite distance? anything over 5k.

How many miles a week do you average? 0 right now - still rehabbing a torn hamstring.
usually 20-25 when not training - up to 60 when I was getting ready for the marathon.

What shoes do you run in? Asics Gel Cumulus. Most comfortable shoes I've ever worn - I really think they do most of the work ;)

I haven't tried the 2100s, but I see they are getting great reviews and Runners World just rated them the top shoe of 2005. I have a slight underpronation though and usually like a lightweight stability shoe leaning towards neutral cushioned.

I see you are wearing the Garmin Forerunner too. I have one and absolutely LOVE it!

I'm a really analytical person sometimes, and love to look at numbers, so it really motivates me! It's also great for figuring splits during a marathon. :)

How long have you been running? I ran for about 10 years, but stopped a couple of years ago. I kinda waddled back when I weighed 245, but after I lost weight I started to run - especially after joining up in the Army. I stopped due to time constraints and knee trouble a couple of years ago and started rollerblading. My bum knee can handle it, but I just can't handle what the bum knee tells me starting about an hour afterward. (The knee rarely bothered me when I ran, but was definitely NOT fine for the next 10 hours. I would actually run when the knee really bothered me - stupid, huh?)

Do you run competitively or just for health? Ran for health. I did a half marathon once in Long Beach and finished in a little over 1:35.

What is your favorite distance? I liked the 10k distance a lot, and could usually do it in about 40 minutes. I usually just ran 4-8 miles when I did run, for the hell of it.

How many miles a week do you average? Used to be about 20 or 25.

What shoes do you run in? I wear nothing but Saucony for running. They were always easiest on my knees and after I started wearing them my shin splints disappeared.

How long have you been running? Oh, I guess 20 years back to high school track team.

Do you run competitively or just for health? Only for health and military life kind of forces me into it. In high school the basketball coach forced me into being on the track team. I actually dread running but have always had to do it anyway, but it does make you feel physically better.

What is your favorite distance? From the car to the door of the house.....did I mention I dread running? Really though, anything 4-10 miles is ok.

How many miles a week do you average? Unfortunately I'm averaging about 35 miles a week right now. (at least when I'm not in the field). 6-6-8-10-4 M-F. (Yes, today was 10 mile day...aargh)

What shoes do you run in? I have Asics Gels too but I'm not sure of any more specificity than that.

Odd I found this thread only a couple hours after the 10-miler this morning. My commander is trying to talk me into running the Houston Marathon and as much as I really don't want to, I don't want to disappoint him either. Guess I'll probably do it. Damn, I swore to myself I'd never do that. Oh, well.

How long have you been running? Well, I used to run a lot, but then i broke my femur in 2004, so I just started back up last year

Do you run competitively or just for health? I run for fun, and once a week i get together and do 'hashes' http://http://running.about.com/od/hashhouseharrier1/ss/hashing101.htm or http://www.gthhh.com/

What is your favorite distance? I like doing 5K runs. They don't hurt my knee/leg that much when I do them

How many miles a week do you average? approximately 15 to 20 miles
What shoes do you run in? New Balance 890s

A 40 minute 10k is great! My best is 39:20.

Yeah, I used to run like a deer. Hell, I did a 10k in boots, uniform, carrying a rifle and 70 pounds in a rucksack in 50 minutes flat once. And I wonder why my knee is ravaged...

I never broke 40 minutes, but I was sub 41 some of the time and sub 42 most of the time. But I could never get under 40 minutes. It was like a built in barrier.

Back in my day, anything over 40 minutes was unacceptable to me. :P Best I ever did was 37:36 in college. Best road time was 38:20 which happened to be the last race I ever ran, in 1991, before I quit. My knees and Achilles Heel tendons were getting really bad. It took one year for the tendons to heal, and I tried comebacks a few times but never felt right. Then I started skydiving... and never really looked back.

I was a Nike man, myself. They had some good shoes back in the 80's, like Spiridon and Huarache that I favored...

Copy and paste the questions for your answers.
How long have you been running?
Around 3 years. Don't really count the few times I went running to lose weight/conditioning for wrestling back in High School.

Do you run competitively or just for health?
Health, although I trained with a former coworker who does marathons for Corporate Challenge 2 years ago. I ran the 3.5 mile course at 6:08 pace. I would be challenged to break 7:15 or even 7:30 pace at the moment.

What is your favorite distance?
<10 miles.

How many miles a week do you average? Mainly just running Mon & Wed - about a 4.5 mile course, but play Ultimate Frisbee 2 days a week too.

What shoes do you run in?
Whatever fits, is not uncomfortable and is inexpensive. Currently, that is a pair of New Balance. I have a pair of barely used flats that I have no idea if I will use again.

What is your favorite distance? Six miles seems to be my usual distance

How many miles a week do you average? I would say 25 -35 per week.

What shoes do you run in? Nike Shocks

The Original Cabana Boy!

How long have you been running?
10 years. Only 2 seriously.

Do you run competitively or just for health?
Mostly for health, but I like to run races because I train for races and it in turn helps my health. I don't care about winning. I do like to break my own records (which are not that high)

What is your favorite distance?
I love the half marathon. (13.1 miles for those who can't divide) I like the 5k too. I would like to do a full marathon someday soon.

How many miles a week do you average?
When not training, probably between 8-12. Training for the half puts me around 25-35.

What shoes do you run in? I ran in Nike Air Max for years. I just switched to the Nike Pegasus. Some people hate Nike and their politics and sweat shops. Me too, but it is the only shoe I can comfortably run in, so fuck everything else.

I would love to be like Dean Karnazes (http://www.ultramarathonman.com/about.php: Run 150 miles on the way to a marathon, then smoke the marathon in 3 hours. That guy kicks ass.
