Do AAD manufactuers track stolen SN's?

Recommended Posts

I'm surprised at the number of stolen gear reports. Maybe this is a yearly thing as people are starting to get the jump itch. I hope most skydivers are as honest as I believe they are.

In any event I wonder if Airtec keeps a master list of S#'s reported as stolen - certainly they would need to process the serial number every 4 years when the cypres is turned in for maintenance. Just curious.

They don't trawl dz.com for stolen gear reports, but if you let them know, they'll add the serial number to their watch list: https://www.cypresusa.com/missing.htm.

The majority of rigs stolen are not stolen by other jumpers but are stolen because they look like backpacks that might contain valuables. Some times the theives pawn the rigs, others try to sell them online and others have just thrown them in a dumpster (which was recovered by the jumper) once they figured out they are not something that is easy cash like iPods or laptops.

Report the stolen serials to SSK/Aritec or to Vigil.
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

A few years ago we reported a stolen Cypres. Two years later it was sent in for its eight year. They contacted us without mentioning it to the owner who happened to be a well known and respected international competitor. It turned out that we had removed it from the rig and sold it to her some time before the rig got stolen and lost the record of the sale so we thought it was in the rig when it got stolen.
So the short answer is yes, they keep track.
