highfly 0 #1 December 12, 2005 A sparrow which was shot dead for knocking over 23,000 dominoes in the Netherlands is to go on display at Rotterdam's Natural History Museum. The bird almost spoiled a televised world record attempt before it was killed with an air rifle. The shooting caused a public outcry. Animal rights groups condemned the bird's killing last month and a website was erected in its honour. On Friday, the bird's killer was fined for shooting a protected species. Prosecutors said the exterminator who killed it should have known better and fined him 170 euros (£114; $200). Freezer The organisers argued the killing was justified, as more than 100 people had worked for a month setting up the dominoes, but they held a TV memorial for the bird. They went on to topple about four million dominoes, claiming a new record - which still has to be verified by Guinness World Records. The bird was kept in a government freezer after its killing became a criminal matter. It will be placed on top of a box of dominoes in an exhibition on sparrows next year. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4519446.stm I'd of eat it if I'd of set those dominoes up. www.myspace.com/durtymac
SpeedRacer 1 #2 December 12, 2005 wow. public outcry and everything. a sparrow is basically like the mouse of the bird world. little fuckers are everywhere. I mean, you can go into any hardware store & buy poison or traps to kill mice for being pests. someone kills one sparrow and it's a national incident & criminal charges are handed down. SpeedRacer 1 #5 December 12, 2005 weird to think of sparrows in decline. They're like the most common bird in US cities, along with pigeons. We also have a lot of starlings too, but they're seems to be room to have a shitload of both species. highfly 0 #6 December 12, 2005 The Sparrow will join the Raped duck in the museam. Sparrow joins 'raped' duck in Dutch museum Donald MacLeod Monday December 12, 2005 QuoteA unique Dutch double will soon be preserved in the Rotterdam Nature Museum - hailed as "the two most famous tragically dead birds of the 21st century". The sparrow shot by an enraged domino enthusiast after knocking over 24,000 dominoes lined up for a world record toppling attempt will join another historic feathered corpse, the victim of the first scientifically-documented case of homosexual mallard necrophilia. Kees Moeliker, the Nature Museum's curator of birds, who was awarded the Ig Nobel prize for improbable research for his seminal paper, The first case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard anas platyrhynchos, took up the case of the sparrow, which convulsed the Netherlands. The hapless sparrow interrupted an attempt to topple 4 million dominoes, setting off a cascade and so angering one of the participants that he shot it. A statement from the museum said that, thanks to tenacious lobbying, the counsel for the prosecution in The Hague has decided to hand over the dead sparrow seized by the authorities to the museum. Mr Moeliker said the sparrow would be either mounted or pickled in alcohol, depending on the damage caused by the fatal shot, and serve as a centre piece of a coming major exhibition about the rise and fall of the house sparrow (passer domesticus). "The domino sparrow is a symbol of the love the Dutch apparently have for this bird, and we will conserve it just like we did with other birds that tell a story, like the mallard duck that was the first ever recorded victim of homosexual necrophilia," he added. The sparrow is currently in the freezer of a ministerial special agent involved in the investigation of the illegal killing, but will be handed over to Mr Moeliker next week. The house sparrow is an endangered species in the Netherlands, with numbers declining by half during the last two decades. With scientific precision Mr Moeliker recorded the rape by a mallard of a second male duck, which was killed when it flew into a window at the museum. He speculated that the pair were engaged in a rape flight attempt. "When one died the other one just went for it and didn't get any negative feedback - well, didn't get any feedback," he said. He eventually rescued the corpse after 75 minutes. His Ig Nobel prize sparked considerable interest in the UK and indeed throughout the world, and a researcher, Jonathan Adams, claimed a British "first" in the field with an account of the necrophiliac rape of a pigeon killed at a road junction in Settle, north Yorkshire, reported in British Birds 1987. Marc Abrahams, editor of the Annals of Improbable Research (AIR), which sponsors the Ig Nobel prizes, said that thanks to Mr Moeliker "the two most famous tragically dead birds of the 21st century will be united". http://education.guardian.co.uk/higher/research/improbable/story/0,11109,1665418,00.html www.myspace.com/durtymac
Snowwhite 0 #7 December 12, 2005 A little known fact is that the removal of ANY birdnest from ANYWHERE is a crime. Even if the nest is in a light fixture on your porch and your house may burn down if you turn on the light. bob.dino 1 #9 December 12, 2005 Sometimes I think that if we, as a species, didn't feel it was acceptable to kill everything and anything to make our lives a little easier, the world might be a slightly better place. To you, it's just a light that makes your porch look pretty. To the bird it's the place they raise their young. Surely it's not that much of a hardship? Besides, baby birds are cool
 Snowwhite 0 #10 December 12, 2005 QuoteQuoteA little known fact is that the removal of ANY birdnest from ANYWHERE is a crime.
