McDuck 0 #2 December 13, 2005 The pictures were great, especially the ones with the mantas. I've never been fortunate enough to see mantas while diving. Porcupine fish, reef squid, cuttlefish, garden eels and a less than lethal brush with a jellyfish, but no mantas. Thanks for sharing those.Kevin - Sonic Beef #5 - OrFun #28 "I never take myself too seriously, 'cuz everybody know fat birds don't fly." - FLC Online communities: proof that people never mature much past high school. riddler 0 #5 December 13, 2005 Water temp was 76-82 - thermoclines were drastic - similar to Cozumel. Current was light to medium. The interesting thing was that the coral was spawning, so vis was only about 20 meters on a good day. It only happens twice a year, and we got it. As far as Mantas, I think you have to get to out-of-the-way places to see them. They're pretty shy if surrounded by divers all the time, and they need somewhat pristine conditions for good feeding grounds. After that, it's all about luck - sometimes you get them, sometimes not. On this week, we had two good days of manta diving. These were about 8-12 feet (there were at least 3 to 4 of them that I could see) and somewhat interested in divers - I think the lower vis helped bring them in closer. As we were on safety stop, they were doing backloops right underneath us.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
McDuck 0 #6 December 13, 2005 Beautiful. I'll bet that was something to watch. I had a pod of dolphins surface next to me once, but I was leery of being left by the boat that was ready to depart, so I wasn't able to interact with them much at all. I'd love to do a manta dive.Kevin - Sonic Beef #5 - OrFun #28 "I never take myself too seriously, 'cuz everybody know fat birds don't fly." - FLC Online communities: proof that people never mature much past high school. I think Florida is probably he best place to go for a chance to dive with wild dolphins. It's cool because they just show up sometimes. I've been in New Zealand on a dolphin snorkel trip, but they never showed up Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
