Gettin the tree

This year we decided to get a live christmas tree, one we could plant after christmas instead of throwing it out. Nothing says christmas less than a street full of dead brown christmas trees a few weeks after christmas, all just sitting waiting to be picked up by the garbage truck.

Which meant that it was going to come with a big root ball; we couldn't just throw it on top of the car as usual. How to get it back? Stuffing it sideways into the hatch of the Prius seemed inelegant. Having it stand straight up out of the hatch also seemed pretty awkward. But since I have one of the only Priuses on the planet with a 2" tow hitch, I figured some sort of contraption was in order.

See the attached picture for the result. An old bike rack plus a modified cargo carrier resulted in a tree carrier that let most of the tree sit behind the car down low, so it didn't get battered too much by highway-speed relative wind. I also couldn't help but notice it's the perfect size for a large cooler.

My parents used to get a live Christmas tree during the mid to late 70's, just for planting in the yard afterwards. Out of 6 trees, only three survive, with one of them severely damage by lightning. The very first one, a white pine, is now nearly 4 stories tall.

Last week I cut down a 20 foot tall cedar tree in the wooded lot next door, trimmed it down to 8 feet and set it up in the living room, all free!
