I was told that it was legal. It not a DOS, it just uses up their bandwith a bunch. Like if you put their name all over a bunch of boards so people will look at it. How many times does this site, or a site like Fark make a link to another website, and a bunch of people go to check it out and end up using all the bandwith in one day. Does that make cross linking illegal? This is the same thing. There is no hacking. It is just the same as refreshing this page 100 times with your cache cleared so that it loads off of the site, and not off of your computer.

How is your action not a Denial of Service, Anvil? You're burning up their bandwidth so no one else can connect (or they have to pay more money in) to their web site. And you have no intention of using the bandwidth productively.

By definition, you're not at all different from any other DoS attack.

Cross linking is tacky in the same way that spam is - you're leeching off of others. Typically not illegal, but if the intent is to take the service offline, you're likely on shaky ground.

Someone please tell me this story wasn't made in a way that made the skydiving industry as a whole look crooked.

It was very well done. Even had the DZO from the real Skydive Utah on there giving his opinion. Made skyride look bad, the rest of the sport look good. I agree we should thank the producer & reporter for an excellent bit. Maybe just point them to this thread instead of flooding them with email? :D

Technically...it may not be illegal...yet.....just because it's too new of a thing for their to be laws about it. But civilly you could be found liable. Not likely to be sued by phishers. But skyride might take a different view. I wouldn't risk it. Not worth it. And regardless of the legality it's immoral.

This is what I worried about when I first saw the link. But, they made a strong distinction between Skyride and real drop zones. They also went and visited Skydive Utah in Tooele and interviewed Jack Guthrie.

Apparently Skyride called the student several times and told her the weather wasn't good enough for jumping (what they were really doing is buying time to find a DZ that would honor her certificate. None of the DZs in Utah currently do).

Jack showed the reporter the manifest sheets for the days in question and there were loads flying on all of them. He even says on one day that Skyride said wasn't good for jumping they put up a record number of loads.

Never mind all the stolen artwork, the no refund policy, the extra charges for weather insurance and the rest. Skyride lies to students. And that's the biggest sin of all.

Oh, and it's okay to e-mail them your thanks. These folks always wonder if anyone is listening out here and they love positive feedback. Besides, they will probably do a follow up when this student finally makes that birthday jump, and if we write to them they'll surely mention that the skydiving community agrees with them.

I'd never direct a reporter to this site. They already got it right, so why confuse them?

Here's a link directly to the text story and the video clip of the story in Utah. Not sure if this will show up as a clicky, so just copy and paste the url.

Ok. I guess the site I am talking about has just gotten lucky and has not been busted so far after all these years of running the program and reporting it to the web hosters and the police.

The differences:
1) the Nigerian scam artists haven't filed a complaint, not being a vaguely legal business in the USA. Skyride, otoh, has lawyers and isn't afraid to use them.
2) they aren't pretending they're not DoS'ing the 419 fucks. That's their entire intent.

So on both legal and ethical grounds, forget about it.

I remember reading somewhere else, I think in the What can we do about skyride thread, that at the DZO conference during the PIA Symposium (if I'm not mistaken) Cary was confronted by several others over the Skyride crap. He was quoted as saying "Go ahead, sue me, I've got more money than y'all and God combined!"

Suing on what grounds? Just wondering. I didn't know about it.

-Like a lawsuit against USPA is gonna make any of us want to ever deal with those two f*cking clowns again! :D

Jaye - take a look at the "What Can We Do About Skyride" thread ... there's info on the countersuit and even a place to download the document.

I got this reply from the producer:

"One other thing that you might want to do because the scam is crossing state lines is complain to the Federal Trade Commission. www.ftc.gov If they get enough complaints, they will launch a federal investigation. And you might want to call your CBS affiliate and ask them to carry it."

Now that is a great idea. I'm sure the more the word gets out to the general public, the less we have to care about the courts getting it done and rather word of mouth. I wonder if any of the CO DZs take their vouchers?
Fly it like you stole it!
