Rio de Janeiro - Any suggestions????

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'll be heading to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil after Xmas for about 2 weeks with my girlfriend. We know someone who runs a newly formed touring company down there, so we're planning on doing the stuff he suggest. I just wanted to check if anyone here has been to Rio, and if so, what were the "oh my god you absolutely have to see this" places, and what were the "yeah not worth the hype" places? I've got 2 weeks down there, so any reasonable suggestions are welcome. Thanks:)

Sundays there is the hippie fair in Ipanema.
You have to do all the tourist stuff; Corcovado (the train is a cool way to get there), Sugar Loaf, the beach.

New Year's Eve on Copacabana (and other) beaches there's often a lot of spiritist religion going on -- check into it.

You can watch buff guys playing 3-man volleyball using their feet (!) at the beach.

The botanical garden is cool; hang gliding off the cliffs over in Gavea is cool. Floresta da Tijuca is cool. Ilha do Paqueta is cool (no cars).

Lots of it is cool. Carry your backpack on your front instead of your back. Looks weird, but much less likely to have things lifted out of it.

Have fun.

Try the sucos, eat at a churrascaria (make sure you're hungry when you go), Corcovado was good, the botanical gardens are interesting, watch some capoiera, do the hang gliding thing (great fun). If you get the chance, a quick trip down to Foz do Iguacu is well worth the price.

Have fun! I'm jealous!

Check my posts the last few weeks, we have been in the area between sao paulo and rio for the last month.

Wendy's tips, as always, are excellent! The view from corcovado, the cable car up pao de acucar, the bonde de Santa Teresa (a classic open air san francisco type cablecar) are all lots of fun!

We had a great weekend in Rio recently. We did tandem paraglides off Pedra de Gavea, everyone can tell you how to get there, just look up in the sky towards the west. Praia de Pepino is where they all land and you can get a ride up the mtn with any of the tandem masters. Hang gliding would have been more exciting. I wanted to stay high altitude for the views rather than bleed off altitude by playing alot. Alysse voted for playing under canopy and her paraglide ended much sooner than my 40 minutes at 1000meters at sunset.

We went to a fantastic bar in Lapa. Lapa is the new place to barhop, many historic buildings are being renovated for restaurants and bars. We went to Rio Scenarium http://www.samba-choro.com.br/casas/rio/236 , the joint was hopping! Highly recommended for everyone, locals and tourists alike!

Have fun, and PM me if you want some more ideas. If you can get away from the big city, we highly recommend a few days in colonial Parati beach, stay in a historic house, take a schooner ride to different islands and beaches around Parati Bay....and barefoot surf a waterfall (see my 'hey asshole' thread). Parati is easily reached by very nice bus ride with beaches and hidden coves on southside, rainforest mountains on the northside....one of the most beautiful rides in the world!!B|

I'd have to agree with that. The old road between Rio and S. Paulo is spectacular, one of the best rides I've ever been on. Just make sure you go with a driver who's going your speed, and not his :P.
