what make a freefly helmet a freefly helmet?

So I am in the market for a helmet and I am confused to what makes a certain helmet a freefly helmet other than there may be a pocket or compartment on it for an audible...

I got a protec-like helmet and I think it is going to work just fine...

Curious to see what people think about the helmets.

Its simply any helmet you FF in. I jump with ppl who FF with full face helmets and thats their FF helmet. Your protec will do just fine.

I would stick with a ProTec if i were you.
They offer way better protection and you can hook up with an audible.
Do a search on the forums and there is a lot of information on how to put an audible on a ProTec.

When freeflying first started, most jumpers wore a fullface, a Protec or a leather frap hat. The Flyboyz (an early team out of Perris) started jumping Gath helmets (surf/water sports helmets) in the mid 90's. Shortly thereafter, Bonehead introduced the Mindwarp and marketed it as a "freefly" helmet. Soon after there were a variety of open faced skydiving helmets available.
