StreetScooby 5 #26 November 10, 2005 I've heard the real DB Cooper was the sherriff of a county in southern Utah. Actually met him. Pretty paranoid guy. Nobody got close to him.We are all engines of karma
airtwardo 7 #27 November 10, 2005 QuoteThat's how I heard it too. And he asked for more than one rig to give the impression he might take someone from the crew along. This would make it impossible to give him a fouled rig. Plus, and I haven't looked at the timeline lately, but I think he was back there long enough to do an I&R . . . NickD BASE 194 *** That's what I read somewhere too... That he did actually open up the one he jumped and did a visual on the lines or some such thing. The article I'm referring to also said that the Feds requested Mr. Woodward to pack a function which he refused to do. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

peckerhead 0 #30 November 10, 2005 QuoteCorrect me if i'm wrong, but; I heard he was a stupid ass that had little jumping experience!!! Heard something like he had a choice between a skydive sport rig or an emergency bail out rig. Of course he took the bail out rig! Back in those days a skydive sport rig and an emergency bail out rig were basically the same thing. Also, I believe he had four parachutes total. Two mains and two chest-mounted reserves. (Two complete rigs)
cloudseeker2001 0 #31 November 11, 2005 What is the best book about the guy? Anyone.....? "Some call it heavenly in it's brilliance, others mean and rueful of the western dream"
peckerhead 0 #32 November 11, 2005 There are numerous books on DB Cooper so it is hard to say which one is the "best" "The Real McCoy" was a book about Richard Floyd McCoy in which the author tries to link the two as the same man. McCoy was a real nut for sure but he doesn't fit the same profile to me. I think he was a copycat and he himself never claimed to be the same guy. Also, McCoy used a jumpsuit, helmet, and goggles. Cooper had no such gear..... Or, maybe he got smart after the first jump?
bodypilot90 0 #33 December 22, 2005 I am watching on discovery a show on db cooper, Troy Hartman even jumps with some of the old stuff he had only out of a otter
NlghtJumper 0 #34 December 22, 2005 I actually work with a guy who claims to be related to DB. He told me that he did make the landing and lived in Canada for a lil while. Use to call the family and update them from time to time. Then all of a sudden the calls stopped, and they have no clue what happened to him. skydiver30960 0 #35 December 22, 2005 Dammit, I try. I try so hard to believe he made it but I just can't do it. I'd love someone to prove me wrong... The dude jumps in the dead of winter over the Northwest wilderness wearing a business suit and LOAFERS, for God's sake. How cold was it on the ground that day? How cold would it have been at altitude that day? How long would he have been able to last in that wilderness after a canopy descent through those temps? Hell, I get the shakes on a winter jump wearing layers of GoreTex and UnderArmor, with a face shield and thick gloves, pulling as low as I dare and spiralling down so I can get back down by the heater as quick as possible. I so desperately wish for the proof that he's alive, and the skydiving romantic in me always will wish for it. But if he wasn't a popsicle by the time he hit the ground, I have to believe he was within the hour afterword. BillyVance 35 #37 December 23, 2005 Well, who knows? Maybe he had military standard long johns (very warm) hidden under his business suit? As well as other items in his bag to help him stay warm once on the ground... Of course, we can only speculate, for he never told the story to anyone... and likely took his secrets to his grave."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
