Something to build with an expired Cypres!!??

Recommended Posts

Not sure of this should have gone in the General forum of here, fingered I'd put it here first -

Seems like we'll have a couple 2-pin Cypres' expiring over the next year. Looking for ideas for stuff to build with them to toss out of airplanes. Since we've got 2 cutters to work with, we can get a little elaborate. Basic idea is for something we can chuck out the door over the DZ high enough for the Cypres to arm and fire, then release/deploy/detonate what ever we build.

One Cypres is ready to go, one expires in about a year (gives me plenty of time to build and do preliminary testing.) Need some really cool-ass ideas!

I've also go a 20 pound bowling ball, access to welding and machining equipment, and plenty of sources for raw materials.

I'm not sure exactly what you should build, but let me suggest a theme, and I hope the people at Airtec see this:

"Something that will be handy as an accessory to the Vigil or other AAD that you or I buy as a next AAD."

This has "well, it seemed like a good idea at the time" written all over it.

Which I wholeheartedly support. :D Looking forward to the ideas!

Lets see the EOL on the Vigil after its been out for 10 years ;)

At the risk of getting this moved to Speakers Corner, I don't think so. EOL's are for moving parts and items that use chemicals subject to contamination or degradation. A shelf life for the cutter and batteries makes sense. EOL for solid state components are kind of a joke if the item is well-made to begin with.

Who was it that made a mini parachute and tied it to a care bear?

Or better yet, the GodFrog! :D

"Pat Works was national sales manager for Union 76, and he used to get various promotional items through his job. Among these were some plastic lawn furniture and a 6’2" stuffed green and yellow plastic tree frog which he took to Nationals on his motorbike. The frog’s name was Carlos Gene Godfrog"

"What happened to the 6’ stuffed frog Carlos Gene Godfrog? He went out under a round during a November 1972 mass jump at Z Hills in Florida and was not seen again for 5 years. “Father Farkle” (Steve McClure) of the “Flying Farkle Family” finally came across Carlos Gene, who had apparently landed in a trailer park near the DZ. Some kids had found C.G. and he decided to stay with them."

Here is what we did wit h2 Cypress' when they expired.

You'll need 2 cypress'
2 kit bags with 150 (+ or-) lbs
2 harness cantainers with 2 reserves. (I used 2 Wings with 2 Strong G-228's)
1 Ch-47 (or another suitable A/C)

Rig it up as you wuld during a normal repack (or pack the reseves with a turn) and strap the kit bags to the harness so they wont come off.

Arm them as normal climbed to 2000' and toss away.
At 750' agl wala, it is actually kind of dull.

Make sure you have all the legal isues (if in the US) to do this. Check the FAR's as to how they apply to throwing and unmanned parachute system set up out of an airplane.

I avoided the FAA by using Army Aircraft, Army equipment and an Army post:P.

Wealso sent along two Pro Tracks t orecord the whole thing it was pretty cool.

Nice so how can one arrange for a jump out of a chanook?

Oh its easy... You just sign a little waiver saying something about no legal action, being a conscientious objector or somethingorother and your in. Three years later there I was... CH47, 800 ft agl and the new sporty, highly elliptical MC1-1 parachute.

You'll love our food.

I think, it'd be really neat if, you rigged-up some Rube Goldberg affair and somewhere along the way, the Cypres cutter cuts a string that drops a bowling ball down a spiral slide and at the bottom of the slide, trips a trigger that launches a cream-pie on a catapault and the pie smacks a jumper that just made his/her hundreth jump... or something along those lines. Whaddya think?:D

Trivia Time - Anybody know who Rube Goldberg was?

Neat idea! - Just have to get the whole thing into and out o fthe aircraft so the Cypres will fire the cutter - !

There has to be an explosion, and Airtwardo should be involved somehow, so that we can get another good story out of it.

I'll even buy the beer if you can actually pull off whatever the hell crazy stunt it is that you're going to attempt.

This is gonna be good!

I've also go a 20 pound bowling ball

Maximum bowling ball weight = 16lbs

I know this has no bearing on this thread but I had to throw it in

They say if you cant handle skydiveing, take up bowling. Sorry I got those confused. Bowling was killing my elbow and I have not Bowled seriously since the 2005 abc amature nationals almost a year ago. Took up skydiving, it dont hurt my elbowB|

wife still bowls and packs a 180+ average and skydives, I'm so proud

Back to subject, I would love to know how this turns out

You're right - 16 pounds - My bad - I switched to a 15 pound ball - I'd be exhausted after a five-game practice session. So I've got this 16-pound Hammer sitting around collecting dust.

mm - An explosion or something at least visually exciting to look at. Must get video of course!

Another Idea.

Use my original test plan but put the secondary "load" on the other cutter. The secondary can ignite a set of fire works. If both cypress' are attached to the same load then you can ignite 3 sets fo fire works. The second set can free fall from the first using the cutters to "cut it away".

Wow! this could get real complicated. I should have done this with our old sets instead of trying to be scientific;).

But be legal and make sure people know what your doing! You would hate to have a bunch of UFO sightings blamed on a skydivers fun.:P

Remember what happened to the Golden Knights during a Demo a few weeks after Sept.11, 2001.
