Elisha 1 #26 October 21, 2005 Ian, I sing in my church choir and another Men's Russian choir (I'm not russian) that sings Russian liturgical music. I've heard barbershop a few times, but don't know what it is really about. Is it just really tight harmonies (e.g. 3rd's/5th's/7th's) moving together? IanHarrop 42 #27 October 21, 2005 You can listen to some Barbershop here: http://www.barbershop.org/web/groups/public/documents/pages/pub_jukebox.hcst A presentation on that page that will give you some background on the music is called "What Are We Trying To Preserve by Dave Stevens" if you click on it, it will give you a lot of background it about 47 minutes and has a lot of demonstrations."Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy

billvon 3,090 #29 October 21, 2005 Good things about Portland - OMSI The mass transit system (quite good) McMenamin's, specifically the Baghdad (pizza, beer + cheap movies) Powell's, the best bookstore in the world Bad things - It rains so much that moss grows on your car They're getting pretty damn sick of Californians
peckerhead 0 #30 October 21, 2005 If you want to get out of the rain Central Oregon Sky Sports is on the east side of the Cascades in Madras. About an hour and a half from Portland. They often have clear skies when it's raining on the west side DZs. The Dz is about 2500 feet above sea level on the high Oregon desert and the veiws are spectacular. Central Oregon is a recreation paradise with just about every thing: Skiing, climbing, golf, brew pubs, rafting, sailing, spelunking, fishing, hiking, camping, hot springs, indian casinos, etc.

Sebazz1 2 #35 December 2, 2005 Anyone got info on local ski areas: Mt. Hood Mt. Hood Meadows Timberline Summit Cooper Spur I was checkin out Mt. Bachelor though and that place looks faaa-kin sweet!
peckerhead 0 #36 December 3, 2005 I worked at both Mt. Bachelor and Mt Hood. Bachelor has the best lift system and a lot of long cruisers but very little steeps and advanced terrain. It's a big mountain. Mt hood meadows is also a big hill with several high speed lifts and much more advanced terrain. Bachelor has better snow. Another fun hill is Mt Hood ski bowl, nice steeps on the upper bowl and lots of night skiing. Timberline, cooper, summit are basically just small beginer areas. Timberline has the best ski lodge in the country and summer skiing on the palmer glacier but in the winter the skiing is not much to talk about. I would stick to the bowl or meadows. NWFlyer 2 #38 December 3, 2005 Just did my first day of the season snowboarding today. If it stays like this it'll be a FAAAAAAABULOUS season in the NW (knocking wood right now so I don't jinx it)."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Sebazz1 2 #40 December 30, 2005 I have discovered a beer that I can't stop thinking about. It is a seasonal beer from Dechutes (Deshutes?) brewery in Bend Oregon. ~2005 Jubilale~ Yummy... I fa-kin loved Portland and all the sorrounding area. I did some serious adventuring. I really can't wait to go back up and check out some of the DZ's. Oh and no sales tax I was there fro christmas and plan on zoomin back up end of January for a a couple dayz of skiing at Mt Hood which by the way is magnificent looking when the clouds actually clear.. Oh and the Willamette!! Glorious glorious Pinot oh I how I love to drink thee.. I promiose not to tell anyone else how much I like OR though... I'll say terrible things so they don't move up with me
leroydb 0 #41 December 30, 2005 [gripe] one of the things I disliked about Oregon is that you cant pump your own gas... Do you know how annoying that is? It has to be a rule that made by mature (read: OLD ASS) people that dont want to get their butts outa their cars... Sebazz1 2 #42 December 30, 2005 That is really funny because I stopped to get gas a couple times and right as I pulled up my first reaction was to hop out of the car and start pumpin but my folks car still had CA plates so they knew exactly what I was doing and where able to stop me... And another thing on that, so I am told that OR is a right to work state or whatever which is one of the reasons one isn't allowedd to pump their own gas, but I go to a Home Depot with my mom and they had those self check out lanes? Ummm hello?

I think I said (in this thread) something along the lines of: QuoteSomeone already posted about Mt.Hood skiing/snowboarding and Skydive Oregon. Lots of breweries too, and you just might like some of the wineries in the Willamette Valley (they're being as burgundian as they can manage, and some are pulling it off quite nicely.) Sounds like you're enjoying the same aspects I do. Jubelale is a great Christmas beer, and the other offerings from Deschutes are also really good. Next time you're hitting wineries, call ahead and visit Panther Creek. I don't think they have a tasting room, but they'll be glad to give you a tour/tasting of their single vineyards...one time I called them about a pinot tasting I was hosting and they sent me a few bottles gratis. Also Domaine Drouhin is pretty damned good (especially the Laurene), as is Freja, and on the spendier side, Beaux Freres. Shit, now I must go find a nice pinot to drink tonight. Sebazz1 2 #44 December 30, 2005 Isn't it cool that the word "chutes" is in the name of the brewery... The Domaine Drouhin is pretty damed good. The only winery we went to was Rex Hill Winery but we did spend some time in Dundee at a tasting room trying various local wines. I will be doing more adventuring next time up. Some of the wines we drank where: Rex Hill - 2002 Jacob-Heart ? It was one of their wines I really enjoyed Ponzi - Wilammette Valley 2003 Pinot (Yumm) Archey Summit - (Can't remember which) Good stuff Domain Serene - (Can't remember which) Good stuff Shit now I gotta go home an open a bottle too
Amazon 7 #45 December 31, 2005 You SOOOO need to do a wine crawl thru all the small towns along OR Hwy 47.. It runs from up on the Columbia river North of Vernonia, OR down thru the Oregon Wine country just in the foothils of the east slope of the Coast Range..literally 100's of small vintners have sprung up.. and some very tasty wines are there.
