livendive 8 #4 October 20, 2005 Go over to the coast, that's pretty fun. Someone already posted about Mt.Hood skiing/snowboarding and Skydive Oregon. Lots of breweries too, and you just might like some of the wineries in the Willamette Valley (they're being as burgundian as they can manage, and some are pulling it off quite nicely.) Then again, you probably already know all about the Oregon wine scene. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

bbarnhouse 0 #9 October 21, 2005 Quote Cornelius Sorry but Cornelius is not just "outside" of Portland. With traffic it can take over an hour to reach downtown. It's closer to Forest Grove and Hillsboro. Forest Grove however is host to the National Barbershop Quartet competition. Oregon is a beautiful state with many offerings. HoodRiver is one of the major points of interest for sail boarding in the Columbia River Gorge, snow skiing/boarding at Mt. Hood and Bend, the annual cherry blossom festival in The Dalles;Highland Games at Hood River CC each year;the Hood River Jazz festival. Downtown Portland has the Rose Festival. Too many things to name. The turbine dz is Skydive Oregon in Mollala just 18 miles from the airport with many skilled flyers. The dz itself is quite beautiful with lots of friendly folk. They do have a tendancy to ask for beer penalties to be paid in Mirror Pond Pale Ale One of the nicer microbrewers also has an eatery. McMinnimans and they are locatd in several places throughout the state. Try the Full Sail Ale. There are several grape growers in the area. Try the one in Dallesport Wa directly across the bridge from The Dalles. Same longitude as some of the finer grape growers in France...who would have thunk it? If you are really adventurous...try the chicken gizzards at the Bar in Dufer and then make your way to some of the best country driving toward Kent. On your way back stop at the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks. Wonderful view. Then make your way across to White River Wa. They have a fabulous B&B with homemade pasteries. Oh and don't forget Hood River produces cherries, pears, apples and other fresh produce which you can pick up at roadside stands. Look for Steadmans. Amazon 7 #11 October 21, 2005 If you go in August, The fall run of Chinook and Coho Salmon at the mouth of the Columbia River is only a little over an hour drive out US 26. Its some of the best fishing there is. Oh and I still keep my sailboat out thereMt Hood in the winter is awsum.... In Summer lots of hiking in the Cascades to be had all thruout OR. There is some kick ass Paragliding at various places on the Oregon Coast. If you go for some real thrill rides the winter surfing is UNBELIEVABLE. IanHarrop 42 #15 October 21, 2005 Quote Forest Grove however is host to the National Barbershop Quartet competition oops... not quite, there is no National Barbershop Quartet competition BUT the Evergreen District contest has been held there. The International contest was in Salt Lake in 2005 and will be in Indianapolis in 2006. It includes the winners from each of the 16 Districts in N.A. as well as other countries."Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy
bbarnhouse 0 #16 October 21, 2005 Quote Powell's Books and the McMenamin's brew pubs. Just about any book you could want can be found at Powell's! I love that place and am glad they have an online store! The brewery makes a wicked burger and some of the best fries around. If you are looking for a bit of family recreation try the Aquatic Park in Clackamas. It has an indoor wave machine and water slides.
bbarnhouse 0 #17 October 21, 2005 Quote there is no National Barbershop Quartet competition Well pardon me but I started going way back in the late 70's and it was billed as "National" so if it isn't so now, I stand corrected. I lived in Forest Grove for a few years but that was ions ago.
IanHarrop 42 #18 October 21, 2005 Hmmm... I've been Barbershopping for sometime - no not back to the 70's but I do know a little about the history of the society to which I belong. Its been International for a long, long time. http://www.barbershop.org/web/groups/public/documents/pages/pub_cb2_00573.hcsp"Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy
bbarnhouse 0 #19 October 21, 2005 Oh Ian you mean we can come to the bbshop contest and actually hear you sing?! As I said it was billed as such when I was there. One would think you'd be impressed that someone actually knew about it!! Since you brought it up I wonder how many skydivers know the history of the society in which they belong? Seb what happened to the winery?
tumbler 0 #20 October 21, 2005 Man I miss it there… left 2 years ago for work in New York but that will be home for a long time in my heart… Get a convertible and cruise the Columbia River Gorge. Stop off at Bridal Falls and walk up to the top. I will be damned if I can remember the name of the one lane bridge that crosses the river, but grab that and cruise back on the Washington side… it is a beautiful drive with many places to stop, hike, hang out… Downtown night life ROCKS. IanHarrop 42 #22 October 21, 2005 Damn straight, I was impressed... hardly anybody thinks about Barbershop singing - especially in the skydiving crowd. For fun here's a shot of my quartet singing for the editor of Canpara (Ned Ambrus) on Valentines Day, I'm second from the right. She included it with her editorial in the next issue of Canpara, but surprisingly I was not flooded with inquiries about Barbershopping from the skydiving community. Now with regards to history - the big difference is that in Barbershopping part of the mandate is to preserve history, in particular this form of singing. And lets be blunt - the average age of the society is 57 so that means half the group is older than that and history is them. In skydiving we seem to be looking for what's next, what's new and innovative. Sure the stories from the old days are neat but... Maybe POPS in conjunction with USPA should start a museum, get some of that old gear to a place where it can be preserved before it rots away."Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy

What's are some really cool things I need to check out or places I really need go to. Where is the closest DZ to Portland? Just curious... Cheers and thanks for any info and advice... I lived in Portland for about two years, and worked in Beaverton, and held accounts down in SW end of the state (Coos Bay, Brookings area). Portland is a beautiful city, even in the rain. Cornelius is about 20 miles west of Portland (30 miles from the airport). It's a nice enough area, and is under an hour from the Oregon coast which has its own character and is quite breathtaking. While Cornelius is only 30 miles from the Airport, its closer to an hour drive because the state has not maintained its infrastructure to keep up with the growth they experienced in the 1990s. I think that Oregon drivers are close to the worst in the nation (my opinion only). On the whole though, Portland is an easy area to "get out of" if you want to go skiing, the beach, whatever. Skydive Oregon is straight south on I-5 from Portland about 35-40 miles in Molalla. Since I learned to jump there, my opinion is not objective: Joe Weber runs an awesome DZ. His aircraft are spotless, well equipped, and modern. The people are super nice too. As a newbie at the time, people were always around to help me if I needed it, and assertive enough to give a kick in the butt too if needed. If you've never jumped there, I think you'll be impressed. The scenery is great too on clear days, from the Pacific Ocean 60 miles away, to the Pacific Cascade mountains and Mt. Hood. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
