Kids, don't try this at home...

Landing on your face in the Eloy desert after the sunset cross country, that is...

Reasons why not:

It gets you way too much attention when the desert patch in question is right past the main landing area (and just before the fence).:S Sample comment at the new year's party "Oh, that was YOU!"

You have to spend way too much time hanging out at the ER at the lovely Casa Grande Regional Medical Center.[:/]

You learn that a neck brace marked "tall" is really only designed for the freakishly tall, not just the midly tall, like me.>:(

You almost miss the New Year's Eve festivities at the hangar (but don't).

The waitress at the restaurant where you ate breakfast the next day looks at you strangely, wondering if that guy you're with is beating you. B|

Your gear gets really freakin' dirty. B|

Reasons why:

You get the good drugs from a cool doc who brags about his DEA license. B|

You get to make friends with other skydivers in the ER waiting room (Hi, Dave from the UK, glad to hear your ankle's okay!) :)
You get first response pampering by the likes of Greg Gasson (a wonderfully calming influence in addition to being a badass skydiver Thanks again, Greg! :)
You get lots of post-accident lovin' from all your friends at the New Year's Eve party. :)

All in all, I'm okay, just a bit of a scare. CT scan and x-rays came out clean, but I'm chilling out and postwhoring today rather than jumping. Just gonna have a hell of a headache and stiff, sore neck for a few days.

Hopeful that I'll feel up to my tunnel time with Airspeed tomorrow, but if not, it's been a fantastic boogie and I've had a blast meeting all the dz.commers I hadn't met before.

Hey, Krisanne! Glad to hear you are, ok. Never a dull moment, huh? ;) This place seems like a ghost town lately. I am in need of some real gratuitous post-whoring from a professional! :P

Are you calling my post gratuitous? Well, I'm back today... postwhoring as I'm grounded. :)

Ouch! B| Sorry to hear that, but glad you are ok. What happened on your landing to make you face plant like that?

I came in faster than expected and overshot the landing area, which threw me into the very unforgiving part of the desert. I mistimed my turn onto final, and though I tried some S turns, I couldn't burn off enough altitude to stay on the landing area (and with the amount of canopy traffic from the cross-country, I was trying to stay as predictable as possible). That put me in a small patch of desert with a big-ass bush (small tree?)... I kind of crashed through that bush and attempted to PLF out a fast landing but suspect that I just got everything all tangled in the bush which caused more of a face plant than a PLF. It all happened pretty quickly.:S

Good goin ding dong. At least the dirt out there can be soft and fluffy....well at least the top inch or 2. Be glad you didn't hit one of those bushes that are like wrought iron.

I'll second that. Last year I managed a little/no flare landing in the desert in no wind with a dislocated shoulder (from a hanging skyvan exit) - didn't hurt a bit.

Yeah, soft and fluffy were not the words that sprang to mind last night.:S Though the first words out of my mouth when Gasson & others were running over to see if I was okay were "I know who I am and I know where I am and I know what day it is." Apparently with the dust cloud I sent up people were surprised I even stood up. I'm tough like that. B|

Hi,
Haven't had a chance to speak with you yet, I'm glad to hear your injuries weren't severe but also unhappy to hear that you were injured at all. As I've been told, any landing you can walk away from is a good one....
Hope you get back up soon.... best wishes!!

For me, that would've made the entire incident worthwhile. He's one of the nicest guys I've ever known.

I'm really glad you're okay.

Well, you know I'm such a drama queen, Remi.

Great to meet you, BTW. You're just as charming in person as you are online. (Take that however you will. :P)

As a very new jumper, I met him at my first Eloy holiday boogie, as well. I have to agree with you, RL. Greg is a wonderful person and incredible skydiver with no ego or SkyGod mentality. He genuinely wants to jump with and help out new jumpers. Glad that he helped Krisanne, when she needed it! :)
