TheAnvil 0 #1 January 4, 2006 The discovery of the new Mersenne Prime piqued my interest in this stuff once again. I've participated in a couple of these before - still am actually - and just wanted to see what else was out there. Quite interesting. Great work some of these organizations are doing. TheAnvil 0 #3 January 4, 2006 That Seti one for a while, then I did this protien folding one that I thought was a bit more useful for society. My WinTel laptop still does the protien folding one, but my Mac doesn't do one. Apparently there are a couple that support Macs now too. Hambone 0 #4 January 4, 2006 Probably a pretty basic question but what exactly are you talking about when you say distributed computing? and how would it help society? I am just wondering, cuz if its worth while i would love to help out.Yeah...You need to grow up. -Skymama
TheAnvil 0 #5 January 4, 2006 It's basically where you use many different computers to solve many different parts of a total problem. You download the software and it runs on your system when when you are not using it - kind of like a screen saver would. It then uploads the results from your computer and gives your computer another section of data to crunch. There's probably a far more technical explanation, but that's the basic gist of it. AlexCrowley 0 #6 January 4, 2006 This would be cool if you were talking about building one. Like I am. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.
Hambone 0 #7 January 4, 2006 I think that it is a pretty cool idea, i have heard about it before but just not in these terms i don't think. If i had a computer that i didn't use i would be happy to help out, but as it is the only computer that i have is the one i am on now that sits in my office. so thats how that goes. Thanks for the info.Yeah...You need to grow up. -Skymama

AlexCrowley 0 #9 January 4, 2006 crunch lots of data.... just for meeeeeeeeeeeeee and none for you Mine's actually a little different, its going to be more in the region of a cluster. Except the rendering farm - which is happening somewhat secretly as I steal cycles from every machine in my office while no ones watching. I'm gonna wear my ninja suit and carry a sack with Mhz stencilled on it, then I'm going to fill it, and empty it into my laptop. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.
