How do I find an old Marine recruiting poster...

Recommended Posts

...from Pennsylvania from sometime between 1930-1960?

My grandfather was used as the "poster boy" for a recruiting poster way back when. He died 21 years ago. My grandmother says she may or may not have a copy. She does not like to share things with us and has actually burnt a few boxes of pictures because "it's nobody's business." :(

I spent several days a few years ago, trying to track that posted down. I called Virginia, DC, the Marine recruiting place where I lived... to no avail.

Do any of you know how I might be able to find it?

Thanks!

Were you able to locate some sort of USMC Publication Archive? That is the first department I would start with. Usually, they have some research/librarian types working it who love to search for this type of stuff - not that they may currently have time on their hands to do so but it's worth a try.

Im not sure how much this may help you, but it is at least a start. I hope you know the general idea of what it looked like...

I did speak with a historian, or someone who worked in that department. I have a copy of the picture that was used for my grandfather's poster, and faxed it to the guy I talked to. He called me back about a week later and said he couldn't find it.

I'll scan it and post it tonight or tomorrow.

I want a copy of that poster so badly. My Grandpa was my hero and still is. He died a week after my 7th birthday. I remember it like it was yesterday and it was a little more than 21 years ago.

I don't really know where to start, so I started with the local recruiting office, like I said in my first post. I called a few offices in Pennsylvania, too.

I do have a copy of his military record... would that help at all?

OK, if all else fails these are the people to call as I have been told by a semi smart marine( insert Marine joke here:P) that THIS is the end all, be all for Marine History. I'd call them as you have a pretty specific and unique request and you might get more help over the phone. (703) 432-4877

did you check ebay

Just for the heck of it, I checked e-bay and they show 61 items under 'U.S. Marine Posters'. You just never know.

Yep, I just checked all of those. No luck.

I am pretty sure it was a local poster, not used nationally. I've called the local recruiter's office here, but had to leave a message. Their answering machine message had me laughing all afternoon:

"Congratulations, you have reached the Marines. Leave your name, number, and address and we will be right there." :D

I was able to narrow it down to the time he was actually in PA. Mom says from April 1961 to June 1964. He was a recruiter there somewhere. His records say "US Marine Corp Recruiting Station Pittsburgh, PA" and "4th Marine Corp District Philadelphia, PA."

Would that mean anything in this search?

It can help narrow the search down once you contact the Marine History and Museum Division.
