happythoughts 0 #1 January 9, 2006 clicky As the former owner of 1970 model Challenger, I would snap one up. The last of the muscle cars returns. Anyone remember Vanishing Point? (the original cult classic movie, not the made-for-tv drivel) Mine had a 383 mag. If you could kicked it at 45mph, it would light 21 inches of rubber for 100ft, push out of shape, and then torque the body over when it caught. QuoteAfter numerous rumors and leaks, DaimlerChrysler today officially announced the new Dodge Challenger Concept, on display this week at the Detroit auto show. The car features a 425 horsepower 6.1L Hemi, capable of propelling the car to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, and through the quarter mile in 13. Top speed is 174 mph. “Challenger draws upon the initial 1970 model as the icon of the series,” said Tom Tremont, Vice-President of Advanced Vehicle Design at Dodge. “The 1970 model is the most sought after by collectors. 174 mph... mmmm... happythoughts 0 #5 January 9, 2006 There are several cars that seem to be timeless. The Mustang is a prime example. Some Mustang models were changed too much from the original while trying to cash in on the Mustang name. Example - The 427 was way too big a motor and had no hole shot because of the light rear end weight, but it was generally fun. The Charger was another classic, but eventually it was slowly evolved into a powerless grocery cart for soccer moms. Corvettes have never lost their appeal. Regardless of the body style changes, they have always had a loyal following.

I always laugh when I hear the new rice-rockets go by. A Briggs-and-Stratton lawn mower motor with a noisy muffler. happythoughts 0 #8 January 9, 2006 I have never understood it. I think the irritating noise and paint jobs are for the attention. It's not about driving. (edited to add) I used to see kids with their mothers car. 4-cylinder motor and glass-packs. "You wanna race." "Not until you get a car." In one with the car, I went through a transmission, a rear end, and 3 sets of rear end tires. Still brand new on the front.

The driver lost control of it, and a telephone pole stopped it. It had a 426-hemi, a close ratio cast iron four speed gearbox with a pistol grip shifter, and what I was after...a 4.10:1 Dana Spicer 60 series posi rear axle. I those days I was real hard on the cars going through more than a dozen of them and probably 50+ engines. However, through all that punishment, car after car, the Dana Spicer 60 never got broken, and the free-play in the pinion gear was still tight. I eventually sold it for about 3x what I paid for it!
