loumeinhart 0 #1 January 12, 2006 do you ever check the time in case it's a gunshot?
AggieDave 6 #2 January 12, 2006 Nope, since they don't sound too much alike. When a car backfires through the carborator, I tend to grab my fire extinguisher, though.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Ashtanga 0 #3 January 12, 2006 This remids me of high school. One of my friends had a car that he could make backfire anytime. One night we were "cruising" because we were cool. There was a cop car parked in the cruising parking lot and he pulled up right behind the cop car. He made the car backfire and sped off. The cop turned on his lights and followed us. My friend pulled over and the cop got out of his car with his gun drawed screaming for us to get out of the car. Thenback up arrived and they had us laying on the ground face down. Apparently the cop thought we shot at him.
loumeinhart 0 #4 January 12, 2006 I used to have an old F150 manual that would backfire 'on command' if I slammed it into 2nd really fast - not sure why but it was cool!
loumeinhart 0 #5 January 12, 2006 OMG thats funny, I never got stopped but the exhaust ignited and blew the gas tank (or something like that) at an intersection and that was the end of the truck!
JohnRich 4 #6 January 12, 2006 QuoteNope, since they don't sound too much alike. I had a '72 Chrysler New Yorker once, with high mileage, and badly in need of a valve job. When you turned the engine off, unburned fuel could collect in the exhaust system. Then if you came back out and started it up again with just the right timing, ignition would light up the unburned fuel and it sounded like a freakin' bomb going off! I actually blew the seams on the muffler open. Inside the car, I was convinced someone had thrown a bomb at me, and ducked down and took cover. When I dared to look up again, all the neighbors had come out their front doors to see what was going on. "Hi! It's just me. Never mind - my car just blew up. It's nothing!"
