peacefuljeffrey 0 #1 January 14, 2006 I borrowed it from my girlfriend (god knows why she has it in her collection) and watched it tonight after work. (And after shopping at Walmart -- there's something unholy about this mix...) MAN that is one fucked-up flick! Talk about showing you how rough it is to be an addict! I had heard that it was gritty and disturbing, but when something like that is done right, it is downright powerful! I think I have never seen another movie that was as poignant and stirring as this one. I'm not crazy about the subject matter -- drug abuse is not my thing -- but still, the people who made Requiem for a Dream really know how to make a movie emotionally jarring. You kind of even come to care about the characters -- they're not bad people, just unfortunate, and it seems that they deserve your sympathy in their hapless predicaments. Anyway, I just had to share that. It's not a movie that you want to just keep to yourself after you've seen it, apparently. It's kind of like seeing a bad car wreck, and you just have to talk about it. There's about one redeeming thing in the movie, though -- Jennifer Connolly riding a double-ender! Hubba-hubba! McDuck 0 #3 January 14, 2006 That movie is the epitome of the downward spiral. It starts out on that slippery slope and just continues to delve ever deeper into the abyss of addiction. It's an amazingly powerful story. Even the mother, played by an amazingly talented Ellen Burstyn, winds up becoming addicted and spiraling down the drain as well, almost without her knowledge. Cinematically, this move has some of the most amazing sequences I've ever seen, and it all comes together in such a way as to leave you angry that you can't do anything to help the characters out of their various predicaments. I love this movie. masterblaster72 0 #4 January 14, 2006 Yeah, that movie rocked. Bizzarre, and cinematically brilliant. I found it to be hilarious in some parts, like when the junkies scattered at the supermarket or the faces that Marlon Wayans was making when he saw Jared Leto's gangrenous arm...the evil infomercial...Ellen Burstyn's possessed refrigerator... If you think that was a effed-up movie, I have two words for you: BAD LIEUTENANT. Absolutely disturbing. Harvey Keitel is so depraved and addicted to the point where he's absurdly funny (though you might not think so at first). Gets five stars from me. I think it was Harvey Keitel's best performance and he should have been nominated for an Oscar. For some reason, junkie movies in general are extremely entertaining and very well put-together -- also see Drugstore Cowboy and Trainspotting. Not quite as depressing, more comical, all cinematic masterpieces and heaps of fun to watch. Also, if you like the artistic aspects of Requiem I suggest you see Pi if you haven't already, also directed by Darren Aronofsky (and quite disturbing too) Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. diablopilot 2 #5 January 14, 2006 Yeah, it is a disturbing movie.....good, but gritty and shocking enough, that I think I was a little queazy the first time I watched it......---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
headoverheels 334 #6 January 14, 2006 One of my favorites. Apparently there is now an "R" version, which is not the one to see. I don't know what they cut out, but the original unrated "NR" version is the one I saw in the theater.
