Kdsosso 0 #1 January 19, 2006 I know this is my Civic Duty, so please do not "flame me". What will happen if I just don't show up? and I call to re-schedule on the date I'm supposed to show? It's a long story, however I really can't make it tomorrow and I'd like to due my duty another time though.
tdog 0 #2 January 19, 2006 I had jury duty the day before an out of town trip... I called the jury duty office and said, "I have had this customer booked for 9 months, here is a copy of my airline ticket with a purchase date before the notice. I would like to reschedule." They told me: "Just show up. Under the rare chance you are picked, tell the judge what you just told me, and you will be excused..." How screwed up is that? Waste my time when I offer to do it right... Anyway, what does your jury notice say? I think the rules are different for every county/state/federal court... Our county court has a 24 hour voicemail box and e-mail...
squirrel 0 #3 January 19, 2006 have you actually been called? or are you on the selection list. if notified by mail, i throw them away... but then i got notified over and over, i called in, and i was deselected. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him? gemini 0 #4 January 19, 2006 I wouldn't throw the summons away or not show up. Since it is to late to call to reschedule, I would go and tell the judge you want to reschedule. He doesn't have to let you off, but usually he will. In some counties, a warrant can be issued for a non-appearance especially if they have a heavy case load and run short of jurors. In Houston one year, they didn't have enough show up and the deputies went down on the street and grabbed whoever they could find. That would really suck! Kdsosso 0 #6 January 19, 2006 I got a notice to appear in the mail for today. Last night I called in to the recording and they said I was on "stand-by" for 48 hours and to check on the recording tonight. I checked and they are asking me report at 8AM Tomorrow.....problem is that I can show up at 8AM, but I really need to be at an important appointment at 11AM...... I just didn't realize they could extend my service time (it does say it in small print)... So I need some good illness or something to tell them I have to get them to let me off...any ideas. P.S. squirrel 0 #7 January 19, 2006 check the verbage regarding "significant loss of income" or "out of the area" i worked on the road, would get notified, and simply call from my hotel in another state...worked, plus...it was honest. and by the way, if it was not delivery confirmed, you never recieved it. know what i mean. yeah yeah, they can issue a warrent, but hey...prove it to me that i got it in the mail, thats what i said, and the judege said..."your dismissed." ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him? indyz 1 #10 January 19, 2006 How far in advance do you guys get notice? I've been called twice in the last 2 years and I've never had less than 2 months notice. Just my luck, I got jury duty the day that a client wanted me to start a short-term contract job. The contract was time-sensitive so I had to decline the offer. Lost a boatload of cash and possible future work on that one. But I did get selected for a trial, so that was cool.
Kdsosso 0 #11 January 19, 2006 I got mine way in advance, so it's my own fault by not reading the small print about being on "stand by" for 2 days after your "date to appear". I'm just an idiot looking for some advice
ltdiver 3 #12 January 19, 2006 1) In California they no longer accept the "Financial Hardship" excuse. Believe me, not only me but several of my co-workers -used- to use it...tried it last year (2005) and they didn't accept it from any of us. 2) You -can- reschedule. I have a co-worker who was out of the country for 8 months. She got back and found the notice just the day before her appearence date. She called and got excused. They rescheduled...she found she could not make that one either....so she called again...and was re-scheduled yet again. No problem. DO NOT throw your notice away. It -will- go on your record and they -do- reserve the right to arrest you (plus fines). Jury duty isn't really any big deal. I've gone several times. They always find a way to excuse me from service. :^) Perhaps it's my honest face! ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

skymedic 0 #14 January 19, 2006 If you blow it off you have a good chance of going to jail. Many states are getting very tough about this stuff. Warrants are regularly issued here in MO and also in IL. When I was in FL they'd hunt you down and serve these warrants when you least expected it. I know it's probably too late now...but you should really just go. Marc otherwise known as Mr.Fallinwoman....

BillyVance 35 #16 January 19, 2006 This is one of those things that I do not have to concern myself with, although it would be nice to be called upon. But due to my deafness handicap, I cannot be used for jury duty. Don't you now wish you were deaf? wmw999 2,589 #20 January 19, 2006 If you just don't show up, and then call, way apologetic, about 2:00PM, they might reschedule you. It'll definitely be too late for you to make it in by then, and they won't have processed a warrant yet most likely. Think of some lame reason (your kid got sick and you took care of them and just plain forgot) etc. It worked for me once. Of course, I really did just forget (I wasn't employed at the time, so there was absolutely nothing standing in my way). hexadecimal 0 #24 January 19, 2006 Keep rescheduling... and when they tell you that you can't reschedule again, scream at them and insult them for as long as it takes for them to let you reschedule again. Also let them know that you'll do whatever it takes to make the lawyers and judges jobs more difficult for wasting your time. This is the method I used a few years ago, and I think they finally got the picture... because I haven't heard from them since
hexadecimal 0 #25 January 19, 2006 QuoteThank you for your strong sense of civic responsibility. I pay taxes... that's enough. I have a job. I'm not going to miss a day of work to fulfill some "duty" I apparently have to work for the government even though they already steal a disgusting amount of money from me every year. Lawyers and judges get paid to be there, I don't. If they want me to be there that badly, they can pay me the equivalent of my salary at work to do it... otherwise they can go fuck themselves.
