If any computer geek can fix this I'll buy ya a jump!

My monitor has dark lines that stretch all the way across the screen extending out from any shaded item. It has been this way for over a year now. [:/]

We thought the monitor was bad, so we bought a new one! :)

We are used to staring through these annoying lines, but it does get old...:(

Anyone? Anyone? :)

Is you video card part of the mother board or is it seperate? It could of gone bad or the software needs to be updated. Try a new video card. Just a thought though. If the monitor doesn't help things then i would point the finger at the video card it self.

Degause? Their post advised they have the issue with two seperate monitors.

Are you using the on board video from the mother board or do you have an add-on video card?

Assumed a hypothetical that there might be fan or other magnetic generating device nearby. I've also bought two monitors within days of eachother that had the same issue with them. Just going on experience and nada more.

open you pc find where the monitor connection is connected to the mother board

does it look like one big piece ????

the reason i ask if its intagrated (sp) then you may have a problem that you cant fix and would have to take it to a pro .............if its not you can switch the video card out

Uh, yeah. :| Hang on...Joe says it was the one that came with it; not an add-on.

I'd almost guarantee you have bad video memory. Your best bet would be to disable the onboard video (if you can) and pick up a cheapie PCI video card from Best Buy or Wal Mart.:)

Do you have any speakers or other objects that generate magnetic fields nearby?

Before you run off to buy a new video card, move the monitor out into the middle of the room, as far away from anything else as possible. Degauss it. If there are still lines on the screen, get a new video card. If not, then it's something in the surrounding environment.

I'll give that a try, but I don't think that's it.

should you decide to try the "new video card option", take a look at the attatchment, the back of your computer prolly looks something kinda like this.

The question is, when you plug your monitor in, is it in spot "B" (by the keyboard, mouse, printer, etc) or spot "A" (off by itself on one of the metal slats)

if it's by "B" you can usually add a new video card without taking anything out, and just disabling the current one. Feel free to PM me if you need help doing this.

if it's by "A" you'll want to remove the current video card and replace it with a new one.

It's pretty easy to find a decent video card for less than $50.

P.S. Another tip for changing a video card that will make things go more smoothly: before you begin, change your video driver to a generic one, and set your resolution to 640x480. then, power off the machine and put the new card in.

Doing this helps ensure when you start back up with the new video card, it will be able to display your desktop, and you can finish the rest of the install from there. Again, if you need more details on how to do this, let me know.

Sony trinitrons have a grille style mask and have two very fine horizontal wires that keep the grille in alignment with the phosphor pattern. These look like two very feing grey horizontal lines about 1/4 fromn the top and bottom of the screen. Many, many brands of monitor use these flat screen tubes so it could be that. These are always in the same place and show most against a bright background.

Other causes could be unshielded cables but without a detailed description of what you see it is impossible to tell. Horizontal streaking from dark objects could be reflections from poorly terminated/shielded cables. Maybe invest in a good analog monitor cable (with the big ferrite blocks on either end).

See the difference between a crappy monitor cable and a good one in this image:

The white out you put on the screen is dirty.

A-HEM. I am a redhead, NOT a blond. ;)

So dye your hair blond, and the answer will present itself!

Start out by plugging the old monitor (hopefully you still have it) into another computer. Laptops work fine. This will confirm problem is elsewhere.

Drop the resolution and refresh rate to a lower value. If you were overdriving the monitor or video card, funky stuff can happen.

Then give a shot with a cheap, or better yet, free hand me down. Unless you're playing games, anything from the last 3-4 years will do just fine.

Minimize all open windows on your computer please.

Right click anywhere on the screen and the select properties.

Click on the settings tab

Please advise what it says in the dispolay box

Ok, so I'm a year late. I got distracted by something shiny...:P

Here's what it says:

Display:
Plug and play monitor on NVIDIA Vanta/Vanta LT (Microsoft Corporation)

Screen Resolution 1152 by 864 pixels

Color quality Highest (32 bit)

So, uh, now what? :|
