My Poor Linux Box Rebooted :(

Recommended Posts

DAMNIT!!!!!!

I come home from work to find my linux box, which had over 1 1/2 YEARS UPTIME WITHOUT A REBOOT rebooted! >:(

I look around the house, doesnt even look like the power went out... Seems that my trusty APC UPS just cycled a few times (there are 3 attempted boots before it finally got to complete it in the logs, looks like in boot sequence and then another "scorpion syslogd 1.4.1: restart" entry and it does it all again.. ) ... I feel lucky that all those half assed boots didnt fuck something up (like the software RAID running on it) [:/] ... Not even any of the typical log entries saying that UPS is running on battery... :S

edited to add: yes, I'm kinda a geek and this stuff is serious to me!

I came home one day to my music server (yes I am a geek too) being turned on and off again, every 5 seconds, by the APC UPS... The very battery/power conditioner designed to SAVE the computer - KILLED it...

The music was stored redundantly - but the OS was trashed and I opted to replace the hard drives - after they had thousands of power downs in one day...

I feel your pain man. Geeks unite. Well, sort of...

P.S. If I told you one of my windows servers running our office voicemail has 1.5 years of uptime - you probably would feel even worse, huh - and the music server at my office is going on 2 years running windows...

Sorry to rub it in.:S

Yea, well, I took the battery out of the UPS and it was melting :S It's got new battery now, hopefully it's not the actual UPS.... but seriously, I almost cried. I even moved that server once with the UPS hooked up!

Dude - a linux OS reboot after only a year and a half? What are you doing to that thing?? I swear I can throw one of those things out of a second story window and it'll still keep going.

I have redhat on one of my laptops now that I use for all my development work. Don't have to worry about the thing shutting down in the middle of important coding. Personally, I think Debian is a bit more stable, but it's easier to get tech info for Redhat.

I feel your pain, horror and degradation. Still, it wouldn't have happened if you had run Debian :D

That's just below the belt man... below the belt... :(

Does it help if I say that my laptop runs Mandrake? :)

I cant believe you would admit that. Dude, seriously. It barely deserves the respect to be called linux.

I know, but ACPI works. :P

Nice man :-) That's really cool hear.

My record uptimes are in excess of three years (jesus, I'm becoming someone who brags about 'uptime' in terms of how long my computers stay up. You know you need help (and a life) when...)

They run FreeBSD in a colocation facility in Portland. And they were backed by APC UPSes... ;-)

last year i had my windows box (aka my desktop) running for about 6 months. Then I randomly heard a loud bang (over some really loud music) and after some inspection found that my power supply had essentially exploded.

This was, of course, 30 minutes before an important deadline and the client was less than amused...

Days since accident: 1

Cold be worse. Walking to work: I saw _all_ the internet kiosk machines doing windows "scan disk" while a cleaner happly vacumed away.

At my last work, I had 999days of uptime on a solaris box at work. I had to reboot it just because I could.
