dmcoco84 5 #1 January 29, 2006 Hey everyone, I just got into the Fire Academy and found I have to be clean shaved every day. I can't shave with a blade because I get hardcore razor burn. I usually shave every three to four days and it doesn’t look to scruff but I wasn’t able to get a seal (SCBA mask) on three days growth. So I need to get an electric razor and don't now how to pick out of all the different types. Any help? Thanks Coco
grue 1 #2 January 29, 2006 I'm far too tired to look up the model #, but the high-end Braun units with the recharging and self-cleaning stand are fan-fucking-tastic. Spendy, though.cavete terrae.
shropshire 0 #3 January 29, 2006 I know that you say that you get bad Razor burn... but have you tried the Gillette Mach 3 Power and use a good shaving soap (the soap made a big difference for me) ? MooChooser 0 #4 January 29, 2006 I think the Mach 3 power is a gimmick. I've found a regular mach 3 to be just as good. Youve probably tried everything but just in case: I get bad razor burn and find wet shaving painful unless i shave after a shower. Stand in a hot shower and hold your face in the stream whilst youre in there. Make sure the water you shave with is hot also and make sure that shaving is the first thing you do when you get out.. I cant shave with electric razors because they give me acne.
bob.dino 1 #5 January 29, 2006 Yup. I also only shave right after a shower. I find King of Shaves gel to be excellent.
Akey 0 #6 January 29, 2006 Yer, apperntly an alcohol based foam is supposed to be quite bad (so the ones you get out of a can) so a soap and a brush may help. Oh, and i used to get really bad burn, few tips i know: Never shave against the grain, it gives you rash like i don't know, and yer, i always shave after a shower with a sharp razo (the mach 3 works good for me, but you have to replace the blade weekly at a min.) If wet shaving still isn't for you, i undertand braun do good ones, but this is only from recomendation, i don't know for myself.
scotts 0 #7 January 29, 2006 Try rinsing your razor under cold water after each stroke, and on your face when you're finished. The cold water will help constrict the blood vessels.
monkycndo 0 #8 January 29, 2006 I use to used an electric and never got a good shave, but didn't like using a blade razor because of the burning from the shave cream. Then I came across Kiss My Face shave cream. It contains no alcohol or propellants. It is more like a lotion that is super slick and moisturizes your skin as well. It took a little while for my skin to get used to the blade, but as you can see from my avatar, I shave my whole head. I make sure I take a small tube when I travel, because I had to borrow some regular stuff and I don't like using anything else now. I buy it at Whole Foods. It is also carried at bath and beauty type stores. And online. I used to shave in the shower so the steam would keep my skin soft. Once I got used to the blade, it doesn't make as much of a difference. I have found I get a better shave if I shave as soon as I wake up. My skin seems softer then and I get a better shave.50 donations so far. Give it a try. You know you want to spank it Jump an Infinity
Andy9o8 2 #9 January 29, 2006 OK here's my quick contribution from a fellow (former!) razor rash sufferer. Razor rash is generally caused by 2 factors: (a) the hairs tending to get a little ingrown, and (b) good ol' irritation of the skin itself. I used to get razor rash a lot - now I hardly ever get it because I've learned these techniques: 1. Make sure your beard is softened very, very well before shaving. Shower is good for this, but if you must do a sink-only job, take the time to wash your face first with plenty of very warm water and a mild soap, until you can feel the bristle soften up. (Dove soap is great for this because there's lotion in it.) 2. USE A SINGLE-BLADE RAZOR. get rid of the 2 and 3 blade razors. They shave too closely for you. Shaving too close pulls the end of the hair below the skin, where it will in-grow. A Single-blade razor won't shave as closely, thereby reducing the chance of ingrown hairs. Don't get the cheapest yellow Bic; I use the Bic single-blade with the lube strip at top (it's got a blue handle). This has been the single best measure I've used to prevent razor rash. (Next time you're in the drugstore look at razors made especially for black men, who tend to be very prone to razor bumps because the tightly curled hair tends to get ingrown when shaved. They are single blade, and have little spacers on them to keep the blade up an extra couple of millimeters off the skin.) 3. ALWAYS SHAVE WITH (not against) THE GRAIN - for same reason, to avoid shaving too closely. 4. REPLACE YOUR RAZOR FREQUENTLY - no less often than about every 5 days. Duller razors definitely contribute to razor rash, whereas sharp razors glide right thru the hairs instead of pulling at them. 5. Moisturize your skin after you shave. skydiverbrian 0 #10 January 29, 2006 Braun is the best electric razor money can buy. And it takes lots of money to buy one (think one weekend of jumping). But razors give the best shave you can get. Use a good shave cream and shave IN the shower. In a world full of people, only some want to fly... isn't that crazy! --Seal
kimemerson 7 #11 January 29, 2006 I haven't used a soap or cream in about ten years. I use a blend of essential oils - called Unique Solution - available through Mont Source http://www.montsource.com/. I get the best, smoothest shave ever and the stuff lasts forever. Hot water, a clean, sharp blade and this solution - you won't even know you're shaving. Even a week's growth comes off smooth. If you absolutely cannot do a blade, well then, forget this. But everyone else out there should give it a try.
airtwardo 7 #12 January 29, 2006 QuoteSo I need to get an electric razor and don't now how to pick out of all the different types. *** Okay here's the no bullshit skinny... An electric razor CAN shave you better than a blade, though 10 years ago that may not have been the case. Braun is a good choice, but if all you want is a 'shave' you don't need the blinking lights, bells and whistles. I have one that I don't use because I like my 40.00 Remington 'micro-screen' from Wal-Mart better! It holds a charge longer, the motor is faster and the blade stays sharp longer. Couple things to remember...change the blades and screen every 3-4 months...(20.00 for a set of three replacements) Pull you rubbery face tight (up) when shaving, and clean out the dead stuff from the razor every day. I've been using the same Remmington for 5 years now..only stopping for a month to give the Braun Xmas gift a try...best 40.00 I ever spent! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
hobbes4star 0 #13 January 29, 2006 get one of the ones that spuges lotion, I had one at is shaved just as close as my blade. dmcoco84 5 #14 January 29, 2006 I have tried everything for razor shaving (razors and shaving gels). I have even spoken to my doctor. The problem is if i shave today in the morning. I won't have 5 aclock shadow till the next morning. My facial hair grows very slow. So I am trying to find an electric razor that is reliable is quality, shaves close enough to look good and whether i should get the straight across razor or the three rottating heads deal. dmcoco84 5 #15 January 29, 2006 Yup, I shave right after I get out of the shower. Hot water on my face, I also wash my face before I shave. I use the gillette for mens face wash and shaving gel. dmcoco84 5 #16 January 29, 2006 Yup I use mach 3 turbo. Well if you don't shave against the grain you don't get a good shave. But I beleive I tried it once where I didn't shave against the grain and I still got bad razor burn and rash. Usually I have to wait 3 days to shave and it won't be as bad. If I shave 1 or 2 days its like cutting my skin off. My razor cost $100 four years ago, and I figure I've spent about another $150 in replacement blades and screens. Probably less money than four years' worth of shaving gels and disposable razors.
