DZO possibly in trouble for insurance fraud

Recommended Posts

Nope, not who you may have been thinking (whom ever that may have been), this one is out of Canterbury (across the pond from those of us in the states).

He "ditched" the plane in the ocen and it was gone, collected insurance money and went on for life. Then the plane magically reappeared in a shipping container. Atleast that's what this article states.

'Ditched' plane found in shipping container

A container in the yard of Wilson’s Bulk Transport has been the hiding place of the aeroplane at the centre of an alleged insurance fraud.
The alleged fraud was uncovered by Ashburton and Timaru police late last week after new information led to the discovery of the plane in a 12 metre shipping container.
The plane was claimed to have been lost at sea after crashing off the South Canterbury coast in July 2004. It was owned and being flown by Ashburton man Howard Laurence Jamison.
Jamison, who now operates a tandem skydive operation from the Pukaki Airport, was arrested on Thursday and charged with using a document with the intent to obtain a pecuniary advantage, namely an Airclaims New Zealand Limited accident claims form, between July 28 and October 31, 2004.
He appeared in the Timaru District Court on Friday, entered no plea and was not represented in court. He was remanded on bail to appear again on February 8.
The alleged hoax was revealed when the aircraft, a Cessna AI185E, was found undamaged in a shipping container at the bulk transport yard.
Company manager John Petrie said he had no idea the plane was in the container, as it was not company policy to ask customers the content of containers that were rented as storage on the premises, the New Zealand Herald reported. When Jamison appeared in court on Thursday, conditions of bail were that he surrender all passports and that he would not have contact with two police prosecution witnesses, Mr Petrie and store manager Jonathan Ward.
Jamison’s plane was reported to have been crash-landed in the sea off the coast at Clandeboye on July 29, 2004, some time after 6pm.
Just before the crash Jamison said he had taken on a small amount of fuel at Timaru Airport and had then flown out to the coast and was flying towards Ashburton when the plane’s engine surged and stopped.
At the time he told the Guardian he had then carried out a right-hand turn over the sea to face the aircraft into the wind, before landing it and ditching it in the water.
The plane allegedly went into the sea near the Opihi River.
Jamison claimed he then pushed the false floor out of the plane, shoved it out the door and used it to surf the 200 – 300 metres to shore.
He told police he then flagged down a passing motorist and headed home to Ashburton where he was treated at Ashburton Hospital for minor injuries.
He subsequently searched the coastline for the aircraft. This was never found.
A report by Civil Aviation after the accident stated no wreckage had been found and because the aircraft had not been recovered, the cause of engine failure could not be determined.
