fcajump 164 #1 February 21, 2008 Riggers, Found this on line for aluminum seals... http://www.altamax.net/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2 Was curious if anyone was using anything other than the ol' lead seal? Gawain 0 #2 February 22, 2008 I've not used those. I'm curious as to if the aluminum seal could end up harming the die in the press (?) I have tried the plastic seals, with an aluminum bracket within it. They tend to cut the seal thread, and I ended up ordering more lead seals. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Programmer 0 #3 February 22, 2008 Looks like the Altamax seals are intended for applications other than parachutes. I don't think galvanized steel sealing wire would be a good idea on a reserve.

Well, it would solve that pesky problem of the seal thread breaking before the next repack is due because of rough handling or what not... ... but it would be a real bitch after a cut-away trying to launch your reserve! While there might be some people I would like to use the steel cable on, if you will notice the site also sells the seals without the cable. JerryBaumchen 1,468 #6 February 22, 2008 About 1967 at the US Nationals, someone 'made' up a chest pack that they sealed with small wire rope. Dan Poynter was doing the gear checks and he caught it. After all, he is Dan Poynter.JerryBaumchen
hackish 8 #7 February 26, 2008 The sealing thread has to be able to break at about 4.5lbs. If you were able to use a wire that would do so reliably then I suppose in theory it could be used but then if your sealing cord is breaking then I don't know that a metal sealing material would be any better (probably less so). As for using aluminum sealing material it could be less harmful to the environment and as long as it's annealed and a soft alloy I can't see it harming the dies. -Michael
