Anyone know about car stereos?

Recommended Posts

The stereo that came with my car is all worn out. It sometimes doesn't respond to the buttons, the down button for scanning radio stations is broken & the CD player skips like hell.

So I'm gonna buy a new one. It doesn't have to be top of the line, but it does have to have a way to plug in my IPOD. I'm going to be driving from Maryland up to Boston in a few weeks, so I will need entertainment for the long drive.

I've been to Circuit city & Bestbuy. They've got a big selection, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Go get the least "ghetto" looking associate and tell him just that. He will be happy to help you pick one out, you can also look on www.crutchfield.com they have pretty good prices and really good explanations of stuff. i have a feeling that this is no help but here you go!

If you want others to install it, go look in their install dept and check out the quality of their work and how they treat the cars as they take them apart.

If you are going to install it yourself, go with crutchfield, or at least get a copy of their instructions and their connector adapters so you don't have to cut or splice anything in your dash. They are also really good at letting you know what stereos fit into what cars.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

Its not too tough i have put a couple in. you just have to be careful. Youu should get a headunit with a hardwire Ipod adapter, Crutchfield will tell you which ones have it. You probably already figured that out.

I've used Alpine, Eclipse, Pioneer, and others in the past, but I'm a big fan of Pioneer. Easy to use, simple interface, great longevity / durability, and awesom features for the price.

I'd look into one of their current CD decks, then add on their
I'm going to move my Alpine MP3 deck into Dagny's Jeep then treat myself to the [url "http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4041_64496601,00.html">Pioneer DEH-P860MP

I'd definitely go with crutchfield. They give you good directions for your car, and in most cases they'll give you the wiring harness for your car and the dash adapter (some plastic bits that will make the square peg fit in a round hole) for free which together will cost you about 30 bucks from bestbuy or circuit city.

If you buy a head unit that specifically calls out ipod compatability, make sure you don't need some external $150 add on box to actually make it work (unless you want to go that route.) Also, and this was a big one for me, keep in mind that a lot of head units that interact with the ipod will disable the user interface on the ipod when connected to it, forcing you to use their, often much more irritating, user interface on the head unit itself.

I went for a simple head unit that had an aux input on the back, and I just use it as a volume knob and a clock. Don't know what your budget is, but it's hard to go wrong with something like this.

Depending on your car it could be a piece of cake or a severe pain in the ass to do the install. The most difficult part is usually figuring out the "trick" to get the dashboard apart. Some manufacturers do some crazy shit with snap in panels and bolts that must have been installed by friggin trained gnomes or something. But having crutchfield's install guide will help you out a great deal.
