Are Precision Wrap-It links TSO'd?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone out there say with absolute certainty whether Precision Wrap-It links are TSO'd for use with reserves, or not?

Yes, I have tried to contact the manufacture, I've been calling and emailing for the past two days but haven't heard anything back.

I opened a rig that had the R-max reserve connected with wrap-it links and I need to figure out if this is legal.

This came up a little while ago with myself and some of my rigger friends. We emailed the manufacturer and got an answer that Wrap-It links aren't TSO'd and Precision also said that there aren't any links that are. This I found interesting.

If you look at Rapide links, they have no TSO markings. Not sure about SLinks, I would have to look at my reserve when I repack it.

Wrap-It links - I have to check my info at work to see if they are TSOd or not.

I think I have them confused with HiPer's links, which are for mains.

PD SR-1 SLinks are TSOd.

Aerodyne's Soft Links for Reserves are TSOd.

Flight Concepts Cinch Links are for mains - they are not TSOd.

There may be more, but those are the ones I did my homework on 18 months ago.

I did a search, and in the thread "PD soft links on reserve" you said

-I researched three soft links: PD Slink SR-1, Precision Wrap-It, and Aerodyne P1487-01. I found written confirmation that each of these was approved under TSP C23d as a "separate component." I either found it posted on the manufacturer's website or they emailed it to me. Note: HiPer listed their link as compatible only main canopies, and Flight Concepts didn't reply to my question about their Cinch Links.

The current TSO is C-23d and refers to drop test standards contained in AS8015b which defines the major parachute components that can be TSO'd. There is no provision in 8015b to have any type of connector links "TSO'd" unless the links are included in a canopy assembly (see number 3 below).

The Precision r-Max reserve was certified under C-23d using "Wrap-It Links" during certification drop testing, and presumably some of the PD reserves were approved using the reserve style Slinks.

Average breaking strength compared:
PD ReserveSlinks= 3600 lbs
Precision Wrap-It Links= 4028 lbs

The "TSOable" components of a parachute assembly are:
1) Deployment initiation device (pilot chute, drogue, or functional equivalent); bridle, if applicable
2) Deployment control device (sleeve, bag, diaper, or functional equivalent), if used
3) Canopy(s) (includes suspension lines, connector links if used, and reefing device, if used)
4) Riser(s), if used, when not integral with harness and/or canopy
5) Stowage container
6) Harness(es)
7) Primary actuation device (ripcord or functional equivalent, including reserve static line, if used)

Genuine Maillon Rapide oval steel connector links are made under another quality control system. The end result is quality similar to TSO quality.
Maillon Rapides have been included in so many reserve certification programs, that they have become an industry standard.

Even the FAA does not set rigid standards for quality control under its TSO program. Rather, manufacturers are expected to submit a quality control manual. And they are expected to adhere to their QC manual, and prove that they follow their own QC manual during FAA inspections of production facilities.
In the end, the FAA does not care about the exact format of a TSO QC manual as long as we keep the fatality rate low.

SLinks include a tiny label ... little more than a part number, that links to a TSO drawing. As long as Performance Designs can prove that all their reserve SLinks are made in accordance with that drawing - as part of a TSO ...

Precision delivers the r-max with wrap-it links as standard equipment (they charge $40 more for subbing in stainless links & grommets). Manufacturer approval is good enough for me. Here's a link to the r-max order form with soft links listed:

A few years ago I asked flight Concepts about using PD slinks with their reserves, because I opened up a reserve and found Slinks were installed on a Firelite. Flight Concepts said NO, they approve what is in the Flight Concepts manual (#5 SS maillon rapide links). Because that's what the system was tested with when TSOd and they certainly didn't want to go approving parts that Flight Concepts hadn't tested. Made sense to me: go by what's in the manual.

Darnit George, this is exactly where my research was headed, held up only by the fact I've misplaced my copy of SAE AS8015b to refer to.

Thanks for the clarification, but I just wanted to be the first to say it.:P

Hi Derek

I asked that as well & never got an answer from Precision, the no. must be on the label but none.

Also never saw a manual for the Raven Max - did you ?

There are some more reserve under TSO C23D without the no. on the label.

Be Safe !!!
