Your BEST ADVICE for neck pain...

Recommended Posts

Mebbe this should be in the 'whiners' thread, but...

Whatcha got? Heat? Cold? WHAT?!?!?! For the love of PETE somebody give me an idea...

And I already went to the chiropractor and a massage therapist today. I worked out and stretched. This is just unreal.

I think that Hydrocodone is calling my name...[:/] I hate taking that stuff, it gets me so looped.

WHAT?!?! Thoughts??? Puh-leeeeease???? :|

OK, Been there done that !!! Obviously, everybody is not the same, so this is for what it is worth. I had neck pain for years. Went to MD, Physio, Chiropractor; the whole bit. Finally it started working down into my back and around my rib cage. That's when the MD did x-rays and decided it was my gall bladder and it needed to be removed. (didn't do that.....go figure).

To make a long story short, I was telling my tale of woes to a Physio friend and he said come into my office on Monday, which I did. He poked around my back (deep) with his knuckles, hunting a sore or tender area and he found about 4. He worked them out (it really hurt in a good sort of way). That cured the problem and since that day, finding and working those deep target areas solves the neck pain. That was 15 years ago.

It felt better immediately, but it took about 3 days to be completely gone. He didn't even charge me. I think I should give him credit, his name is Don Lowe from Florence, SC. He is now retired and his son runs his practice.

try and extract the closing pin necklace from between the vertebrae. Should do the trick.

otherwise I use hot, and muscle relaxant like maryjane before going to bed.

-That necklace has been on for weeks...:$

Who's mary jane? And why would she be in my bed? :|

I get deep tissue massage (yeah it hurts but it loosens this up) once to twice per week.

It does help right after.

Thanks for the advice...I will try the heat stuff...the goo and the heat pack. I'll also ask my massage therapist to go a little stronger (I might cry :S).

I don't get it. I was really getting better just a few months into treatment last year, then it's like everything started going in reverse. I can't even blame it on jumping; I think I've done 3 jumps in a year. I was just too weak to flare, so I took myself outta the game. [:/]

Where the hell is that whiner's thread when you need it?! :S

Stay away from a chiropractor until you've seen a regular MD. My mom's cousin suffered from neck pain and went to a chiro for quite a while without improvement. She finally went to a regular doc and it turns out that the pain in her neck was from enlarged lymph nodes due to hodgkin's disease! The chiro had been trying to treat cancer by adjusting her spine. Also, spinal manipulation can be very harmful, especially for people under age 45. There is a professor at my school who was paralyzed by a chiropractor.

You can read about some of the risk factors here:

http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/content/full/166/1/40

Some of the problems caused by chiropractic adjustments can be fatal:

http://www.canoe.ca/ChiroYork/lana_lewis.html

You can find some information about when to use heat or cold to treat an injury here:

http://sportsmedicine.about.com/cs/rehab/a/heatorcold.htm

What it pretty much comes down to is that if it's swelling or bruising, use cold, and if it's stiff muscles or joints, use heat. The best thing to do, though, is to go see your doctor, and follow their advice.

Try those heat packs that have some type of disks in them that start to heat up when you open the package. They make them specifically for different parts of the body - neck, back, shoulder. The heat is great and lasts about 12 hours.

I also can't say enough about the foam contour pillows. A $30.00 investment that works miracles for me. Feel better.

Tiger Balm.

Go to a health store like Molly Stones, Real Foods, Whole Foods, whatever you guys have up there. Get this stuff called Tiger Balm. Rub it into the effected area. Rub it DEEP into the effected area. Then go wash your hands and for goodness sake, don't touch your eyes or your cha cha with it! It'll sting like mad!

Tiger Balm. That stuff is amazing.
