College Students...(and college graduates)

Recommended Posts

So, who are the college students?

What year are you? What university do you attend? What is your major and how did you decide what you wanted to study? B|

Heck, even if you're not in college anymore... how did you know what you wanted to study?

Im in my first year at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, studying International Politics and Intelligence Studies. I did Politics at A level and loved it, so it just seemed like the natural thing to do at uni. And the whole intelligence part just sounded real cool. B|

4th year Business Student at Marquette University

Working on a degree in Business Adm. Major is IT.

Choose it because it allways came naturally to me and I found it fun and interesting. I like that my degree is not just like comp sci though. Having it as a business degree in general leaves me open to many more options.

Currently at the Medical College of VA pursuing my MD. Got my BS in Math and CS from Hampden-Sydney College. I pretty much did math since I knew I was good at it, liked it a lot, and knew I could use it to get the grades that I would need to apply to medical school. Unless I wanted to be a teacher or a code monkey, abstract math doesn't carry over well into the real world. :(

heh, my 2 favorite 'pub' friends posted! SWEET!

Do you ever get burnt out on whatever it is you are studying? I wanted to study architecture... but I took one class about architecture and I'm like ahhhhhhhhhh this is SO boring! Do I REALLY want to do this for the rest of my life?

Maybe, I can just marry a rich man and be a house wife?!?! hmmm.... maybe ... maybe not!

St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY. Class of '99. BA in English/Writing focusing on screenwriting. My mom was a writer... so I've been one all my life. Thought about Psychology for a bit - realized I was pretty nutzo myself - and headed for safe ground instead. :P

I love to learn. Toyed with the idea of going back for a Masters.

Interesting question...

I went to MIT thinking that since I loved math and science, I would be an engineer or scientist. I love my Chemistry classes, but I loved my summer job more.. I was a camp counselor.

I went back to MIT thinking that I would pick up education classes, but MIT doesn't have an education department. I would have had to go down the street multiple times a week to take the classes at Harvard.

So....I packed up my stuff and moved home, enrolled in Washington University, and completed my BA in Chemistry and my Master's in Education.

I currently teach high school math.....

Finishing up my 3rd year in school. I was at the University of Illinois studying computer science for three semester, then I came home and am working towards an associates at a community college. My major is Computer Information Systems, better known as Applied Computer Science. In the fall I should start dual enrollment, finishing my associates at the community college and beginning work on a bachelors.

I just graduated from THE Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio. Now I'm down here at Naval Flight School in Pensacola, FL...even worse than college as far as the classwork goes. You could say it's a form of grad school :P You can't beat the weather here and the fact that I'll be flying for a living, tho.

I have a finance degree and work in construction management. A degree is a degree, ok a business degree is a business degree, so unless you want into a specific type of work, ie medical, engineering, law, etc., just get a degree and figure out what you want to do in life, and then change your mind 10000 times.

See, thats awesome!!! FallinWoman, are you happy with your decision?

I went into college thinking I would love to be an architect, and now... I'm looking at becoming a teacher... and math is something I enjoy, for the most part. I don't think anyone could pay me enough money to teach English.

College and success are touchy subjects in my family. I have a brother who is 5 years older than me, who went to college... failed out once and then failed out AGAIN and then the University politely asked him not to return. My brother is by no means an idiot, he just couldn't manage his time and a wild partying fraternity. My parent's stopped supporting him financially after he failed completely out of college and my dad still resents him for his 'failure' (as my dad would say)... My brother has by no means failed... he works as an assistant general manager at a restaurant in Hawaii... he's happy and he's learning to manage his money... although, he does wish he had stayed in school...

My parents are paying for my education under the assumption that my grades are to stay decent.... and this semester is looking a little rocky compared to the last....[:/] But, my main concern is letting my father down and losing financial support. Becoming an architect is a decent and worthy profession in my father's eyes and he really wants me to pursue it... but I don't have the nerve to tell him I'm not at all interested in architecture anymore... If I were to tell him I wanted to be a high school teacher he would tell me how little money they make and blah blah blah.... [:/]

I feel like I'm going to college, just to go to college... I suppose that's just the way it works... or am I wrong?

Well, I haven't been in college for a long time, but I cycled through a large number of majors before settling on sociology.

Why there? I did social work during a year I took off and enjoyed it, so I went and studied more of it. Plus it was an easy major for me at the time. I've enjoyed the insights it gives me ever since.

I don't do anything related with it at work except for talk to people. I work with computers now.

I paid for college myself after I took the year off; that made it entirely my decision, and it also gave me a strong incentive to do reasonably well, since it was my money.

Graduated last May from the University of Maryland with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. Tonight I start grad school... going for an MBA. Totally not interested in bidness but it sounds a heck of a lot easier than a masters in engineering right now, and my company pays 100% (including text books) so what the heck. Maybe I'll do more engineering later. But after being out of school for nearly a year, the thought of doing homework sounds so awful. Tonight is just orientation. Maybe I'll skip... :)

Hey hey Aggie girl. I'm a junior at the University of Houston, majoring in Kinesiology: Exercise Science. I switched from ministry, to mathematics, to where I am now, and I'm sure its what I want to do. I have a passion for athletics, health, and how the body operates. Not exactly sure what I want to be when I grow up, but the options are present. Maybe a personal trainer, maybe a coach, or who knows.

Yeah, I'm so grateful that my parents are willing to pay for my education, but at the same time... I'm sure I would probably be making better grades If I were paying for it myself...[:/] My grades are by no means BAD, they just aren't what I'm quite used to making...

I'm a freshman at a local community college in Washington. Just recently decided to give up the full-time skydiving scene to pursue a degree, so that I can one day afford my addiction better. I tried going to school once before, but had no motivation. My time away from school has helped me to become more focused and goal oriented.

So my major is going to be early-education. I want to be a kindergarten teacher! I love hanging out with children and the work schedule of a teacher seems to go perfectly with skydiving. Summers off.. yeah baby!

Anyways.. theres your answer.

Went to Auburn University for 2 years and that's where I met my wife. She got into Med School at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). That's Birmingham, Alabama for those of you that don't know. I transferred there and graduated with a B.S. in Management Information Systems. It's a good thing I got married and moved too. I would probably still be drunk, in Auburn, and without a degree if she hadn't straightened me out. :S I picked M.I.S. because, at that time, I knew I'd be able to get a good paying job when I finished. :P

I went to TCU as a freshman on a vocal performance ride.. and figured out that I dont want so sing for a living.. but I had no idea what I wanted to do. So I moved to Austin and got a job in the IT industry, figured out that I was good at it.. then went back to school to finish and got my degree in MIS.

Its good that youre getting ideas about what others have been though, but you really have to find what works for you and make your own path. A&M is a great school. You'll do fine with pretty much any degree from there. And remember, just because you study one major in college, does not mean thats what you have to do for the rest of your life.
However, if you want to be an architect, doctor, etc.. that specialized degree does help..

Finished my degree last June. BA in Athropology from University of Durham (UK).

Knew if I didn't study that I wouldn't have gone to Uni, but I can't say I enjoyed the experience as much as I thought I would. Made great friends, started skydiving, but whereas Uni was feted to be the place where your own opinions and theories are valued, I found this was only true if you agreed with your lecturers (a notable few excepted). Swore I would never go back to an academic institution again in my life - what a great impression it had on me - though I wouldn't rule out doing some sort of PhD at the Open University, but only in something I was truly interested in, and with no ambitions to get a job or become an expert. Something to do with sharks or dolphins, maybe. I just love learning!
