JohnRich 4 #54 February 9, 2006 QuoteOne of you Texans who've been here longer than me...can you figure out a midway point for all of us? This is Texas - everything's BIG. sixtysevengt5oo 0 #57 February 9, 2006 OK so if there are three different places trying to meet at an equitible place centerville is it, unfortunately the only reason anyone knows where or what Centerville is, is because it is basically the center of the trip between dallas and houston, if you are tring to find a half way point between dallas and college station Waco is the best, approx. 1.5 to 2 hours from both places, and there really isnt even a mexican food restaurant there, there is a place that is like a hotdog stand that has really good tea, and a fast food joint in a gas station, a DQ and a Jack in the Box, its basically a pit stop on the Dallas --> Houston or Houston --> Dallas Marathon
AggieDave 6 #58 February 9, 2006 QuoteOh...and I am the new manifest bitch! Blush What happened to the Queen Bee? She ran off with some guy named Todd, haven't seen either of them since Sunday. I think there might be something there. SpeedRacer 1 #59 February 9, 2006 Quote Ice cubes and tortilla chips. Not that other places don't have them, but how many other places have them in the shape of their state? Colorado and Wyoming have ice cubes and crackers and even letterhead shaped like their states. Where would you rather be and why? Walt Any where but Texas and Oklahoma! Taxes and fee are high and cops are jerks! Well the taxes and fees things is relative. Texas does not have a state income tax, so yes, sales taxes are higher than I think they ought to be. I don't know where you live, but Austin as awfully high property taxes and has for years because so much of the valuable real estate is occupied by state agencies and, of course, the University of Texas at Austin, all of which are tax exempt. Cops in Texas vary just like everwhere else. I live in Houston and I think we have a really professional city police force--I've never had a bad experience with them. It is a very large force, since Houston is the fourth largest city in the US, so they are bound to have a few bad ones, and we do have some occasional incidents where officers either do not respond in a timely manner or in as professional a manner as they should, but overall, I think Houston can be very proud of its law enforcement people. The worst I've ever been harassed was by a State Trooper with the Chambers Country Drug Task Force. In my opinion, that officer had no business having a handgun, let alone a badge and the authority and responsibility that goes along with it. I think he was a serious anomaly though. If you are homesick, I can really understand that. I lived in Texas a very long time then moved to a small-townish environment in upstate New York for five very long years. The people there were nice and the climate in the summers was wonderful, but I never really adapted to it. I wanted to be home and it felt incredibly good to come back. Wherever your travels take you, I hope things work out well. And if you'll just ask the Texans who inhabit the bonfire for some hints on how to enjoy Texas more, I'm sure you'll get some responses. If you are willing to travel that far to hang out with a friend, then it's a safe bet that you're going to have a good time. There is no shortage of things to do here, including jumping (we've got two great Otter DZs here and a Cessna DZ that really rocks just up the road in Beaumont.) The culture really is different from the places you mentioned. I have lived in Kansas (right next door to Missouri), Ohio, and New York, so I'm aware of the culture shock. I hope you end up in a place more to your liking at some point. Walt
masterblaster72 0 #67 February 10, 2006 QuoteEvery time I turn around, there is a new thing created, JUST for this state. The newest contribution? Wendy's has created a "Texas Double" hamburger. I suppose that would explain why Houston (#1), Dallas (#5), San Antonio(#8) and Ft. Worth (#10) are all in the top ten fattest cities in the USA, wouldn't it... Wonderful contribution Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

cloudseeker2001 0 #70 February 10, 2006 QuoteHalf way between DFW and B/CS isn't that exciting. Infact I believe its either Centerville or Fairfield (if you're on I-45), luckily both of those places have not only a gas station but also a Dairy Queen. Forget the DQ. On the east side of 45 in Centerville there is restaurant that has the best fried catfish and its on an all you can eat buffet!
