Linux peeps advice neeeded

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I'm doing a job for a charity FOC and need to set them up with a mail server for about 7 users. Normally I do MS stuff and would stick in an Exchange box but their budget (zero) wont stretch to that and I'm thinking of sticking in a Linux box. I've messed around a bit with Red Hat, Mandrake and Ubunutu.

SO heres the question, does anyone have any reccomendations on easy to install/configure reliable package I could use, preferabbly something thats got a nice GUI on it?

I'd rather not spend too much time on it due to the FOC nature of the job.

Thanks in advance

James

And yes I have googled this but I'd thought I'd see what folkshere have to say.

Any of the above would do.

But Ubuntu's probably a solid choice and has less annoying shitty things to it than Redhat or the bloatfest that Mandrake became.

Thequestion was notreally about which distro I'd use (although I'm leaning to Ubuntu, the only time I'm using XP at home nowadays is ifI want to play games) rather is their an easy reliable application that includes sendmail etc in an easy to use way without fucking around with conf files too much. Apologies if I didn't make that perfectly cromulent in my original post.:)

no i didnt really read your post.

And no.

Dont fuck with linux if you dont have time to learn :)

Although I'm sure there are some happy little GUI things out there, but I dont ever use one.

What about a Mac server? BSD base, ease of use.

Or go with the Windows option. For 7 people it wont make much difference.

And fuck sendmail, use postfix.

TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

Yup, Ubuntu kicks ass, using Automatix I got everything working properly, even got 3d working on my Nvidia card with TV-Out. Took me nearly 2 days when I first attempted it on my first linux install a few years back.

I am interested in learning, its just that this needs to be up and running ASAP and my local linux dude (we used to work as minions togethier when we were sucking satans cock) is on honeymoon for the next couple weeks. When it breaks he can help me fix it.

Seriously.. if you dont know EXACTLY what you are doing, stay away from Sendmail.. It is so easy to hack if poorly configured that it's not even funny anymore..

Take a look at qmail instead for a mail server on Linux.

Qmail can be a bear to set up, or I'd have suggested it.

Postfix, designed to be secure out of the box and with a relatively obvious configuration script makes a great deal of sense for anything but high performing mail servers (due to cost of DNS lookups).

Nope, never heard of it.

Looks like they have a free version for Ubuntu here

I haven't used helper apps in about a decade, so other than knowing that Webmin is considered ok I can't really help you there.

In the end it is much faster to simply read the documentation (really, check out Postfix it's as easy as changing $myhostname to whatever your hostname is, and switching 1 or 2 more variables).
