ranchgirl 0 #1 March 11, 2005 Hey everyone, I'm going to that be jumping at the www.brazilboogie.com Boogie!!! But I'm not going with the whole package/group thing because I have my own flight...and I want to visit and sightsee in Rio. Anyone have any advice (besides the "stay safe" stuff) or know any good places to go there. Or anyone know any forums in Brazil for skydivers where I can maybe meet/talk to skydivers near Rio. My trip to France and Spain last year was SO awesome because I contacted people there beforehand and ended up meeting up with 15 skydivers one night in Paris for drinks bc we all organized it on a site similar to dropzone.com (called www.wuza.net). Anyway, let me know if you know any skydivers there, and give em my email address or give me theirs and I'll contact them...THANKS!!!! I fly into Rio on March 23rd. My email is crystalsanchez at aol dot com.-Crystal

marcandalysse 0 #4 March 11, 2005 Well, when talking about Rio, the 'safe stuff' is important. We call the place 'tiro de janeiro'....'shooting de janeiro' for a good reason. I suggest hanging out with the boogie participants as much as possible. There will be lots of Brazilian skydivers to meet. Always keep your bag in front of you, arm securely holding it. Do not think that just because you are in a place filled with people in the daytime you will not have anyone attempt to steal your stuff. Never leave stuff alone on the beach when going into the water. Stay in most touristy places, in groups. Drink bottled water. Those tasty juices sold everywhere have tap water ice cubes in them. Agua de Coco (coconut water) drinking it with a straw straight from the coco is a very healthy and safe way to stay hydrated. Highly recommended! There are lots of great snacks (salgadinhos) in the delis/bakeries/sweetshops found everywhere. Be sure to try Coxinha de Galinha, Empadinhas, Pastel, Esfias and kibes (the last are arab style snacks). If the Cachaça rum is too strong for you, you can have your fruity drinks made with Vodka instead. Called Caipiroska instead of Caipirinha, is a Brazilian daquiri type drink. Batidas are Cachaça or Vodka mixed with any fruit you want. Tasty and very strong! In Rio, one of the very coolest things to do is take the Bonde de Santa Teresa, the last of the cable cars. There are nice places to snack on top of the hill. Of course, the ride up to the Christ statue is very nice, as well as the ride up Sugarloaf Mountain. Rio is incredibly beautiful, especially seen from above it all! Brazil is a great place to visit, but most big cities should be avoided. Best is to hang out at beach towns like where the boogie will be held. You will experience all of the fun and pleasures and few of the hassles..... Boa Viagem! Tudo de Bom! Have fun! wmw999 2,589 #5 March 11, 2005 When I was in Brazil last I tried to hook up for a jump (couldn't due to schedule), but I found that people were pretty responsive to email -- you can go to the Brazilian skydiving assn clubs web page http://www.cbpq.org.br/clubes.php and look for just about any big club in Rio or S. Paulo -- they'll all be there. If you just email several, you can talk to with whoever answers with intelligible English. How to tell which are in Rio & S. Paulo? Look for the 2-letter acronym at the end of each "Local" line; that's the state. Rio de Janeiro is RJ and Sao Paulo is SP. Boituva in particular is a large DZ with a number of clubs. In Rio, if there's a non-jumpable weekend day, you should take in the "Hippie Fair" in Ipanema. It's a mega-fair with significant arts, crafts, and jewelry. And yes, you HAVE to walk down Copacabana beach, and looking into the windows of some jewelry stores (you are a girl, after all If you use a backpack for your purse, just carry it on your front instead of your back. Have a great trip Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. ranchgirl 0 #6 March 11, 2005 Thanks Wendy, your information is GREAT!!! I knew my dz.commer friends would pull through for me! I've also already emailed a few of the team members of Fly Factory...(a Brazillian freefly team) that I found by just searching on the web, and one of them already responded! I'm probably going to meet them at the Rio de Janeiro airport on the day I get there and he said I can drive up with them in their van! He also said that there will be a lot of people at the boogie who live in Rio, so I will probably be able to find someone going back to Rio after the weekend to stay with...and if not to stay with, at least to hang out with! I'm getting excited!!!!-Crystal
