jkbernstein 1 #1 February 15, 2006 Yesterday, I got the very frustrating - though not completely unexpected - news that I have to have YET ANOTHER shoulder surgery. I had two surgeries on my left shoulder last year. My left arm was completely out of commission for a total of twelve weeks; I couldn't jump for almost 8 months. This surgery will be on my right shoulder. (I've just beaten the crap out of my body for years) My right arm - I'm right-handed - will be in a sling and strapped to my body for around six weeks. Then I'll have 4-6 months of PT. If I'm lucky, I may be jumping again by July. The timing is totally crappy. After many years of jumping inconsistently (due to money and weather limitations), I've finally been able to jump regularly and, consequently, improve. I'm not a phenomenal skydiver by any means, but my skills are (at last) solid, and my performance is consistent. I just got my C license. I'm about to take a coach course. This is a SUCKY time to be stuck on the ground and I AM PISSED!!! Can I get collective round of sympathetic noises, please? __________________________________May the (relative) wind take your troubles away...
wildcard451 0 #2 February 15, 2006 no. but take the time to heal. don't wreck your shoulder just to get a jump in a bit sooner than you should. good luck with the op.
Rebecca 0 #3 February 15, 2006 Asking for sympathy from a group of fellow hard-charging, self-destructive, metal-reinforced skydivers is like... well, it's like asking for something else you won't get much of. But best of luck with the surgery! (no, seriously, you have my sympathy. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? Rebecca 0 #5 February 15, 2006 Quoteno toe pick for her? No, no toepick for her. It's being reserved for attitude adjustments in the SC along with my nunchucks. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? thegreekone 0 #7 February 15, 2006 I remember when my mom had her shoulder rebuilt. She was miserable, had to sleep sitting up, and basically was in hell for a while. YMMV since we found out the guy who was watching over her, wasn't. It was a bad couple of months and her movement is nowhere near 100%. Now, she is much older and shattered the thing while falling on ice. Hopefully this will be not in that realm of disaster and discomfort.

jimmytavino 16 #9 February 15, 2006 You absolutely have MY sympathy jkb,,,, and I KNOW of which you speak... I had arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, on my right shoulder about 1 week before this past Thanksgiving... The Doc said he found "massive tearing, frayed ligaments and a muscle which was torn lengthwise as well as on it's end"... ...I had first hurt it 4 or 5 years ago, landing in a mud puddle, near the pea gravel.. In a effort NOT to slip right on my butt when my feet kicked out.. I reached back with my arm to "catch myself"and really racked it,, when I fell against it...Then this past july 10th, while exiting a 6-way from a casa,, that same shoulder dislocated....( interesting dive ) ( good campfire story).I recovered enough from that, to get back to jumping by early sept. 2005 but the MRI made it clear that repair was needed...So we booked the O R . The doc worked hard.... we were over 2 hours in surgery.... he had to do some things he didn't expect and didn't do all he hoped to do.... So......... Yes.... Yes Sling, for a long time.. and Kick it down to half speed for many things...Are you able to get a medical leave from work???? You must go easy the first month or so... ( although it DOES depend on the nature and severity of your damage, and just what needs to be done for you, by the doctor ) They P T people had me stetching the arm the day they removed the stitches... 4 days post surgery.. I have a regimen of excersizes which I do , Stretching, ceiling mounted pulleys, and resistance tasks, using rubber/elastic stretchy tube...You must follow through,, as i'm sure you know... I do PT 5 times a day,, though each session takes less than 15 minutes at a time....They said 4 to 6 months recovery and up to one year... til " back to normal"... IS it absolutely essential that you have the surgery NOW ??? any reason It can't wait til Autumn,, do you jump year round , where you are?? or do you have an off season???...Are you able to jump at the moment???? if so , can't you consider waiting til after this upcoming season??? My left shoulder is also in tough shape and the last visit with the Doctor.. he asked.. " do you want to get an M R I done on that one"...... I said "hell no Doctor .. Let's get THIS one fixed first." I have very very seldom been hurt to the point where I could not make a skydive,,,, and it is TOUGH!!!!!! I'm shooting for May or June of this year.... good luck ............
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
