Slappie 9 #1 February 15, 2006 I think the Bonfire needs an infusion of spunk and vitality. It's gotten pretty stale with the same old crap fluff and asskissing posts over an over again. Who's going to take on the task of douching the Bonfire and making it smell better? I would give it a shot, but I've been covered up at work with LC's coming from the commies (Chinese) left an right. I'm sorry to those who looked up to me and my quest to kill the fluff, I've fallen down on the job and dropped the ball.. Please someone carry on the tradition.. base689 0 #18 February 15, 2006 > Ok, I'll offer myself up for sacrifice by writing another story sometime soon if that will help Walt, please, either re-post or post the link of the story when you and 460 went to study that B, where you wore the red T-shirt and the long trench (to hide the measurement equipment) and so on, because it is so incredible and so funny, I made a mistake not to print it out that time I read it. We are going to have a sort of BASE boogie here in Italy in a couple of weeks time, with relevant pre-boogie dinner the friday evening, and I would love to read (=to translate in real time, actually) that story to my mates. waltappel 1 #21 February 15, 2006 QuoteWalt, you're OBSESSED with your stories I don't know how to respond to that. In a way I *am* controlled by them. When one is ready to come out, I cannot stop it nor would I if I could. It's a weird thing, but fortunately, most people around here don't seem to mind. You know you are one of my BASE heroes, Walt, yes? You know that around 1999 a wrote a sort of "BASE manual" out of your articles you published in afn.org/skydive/base (and few other articles by Tom B. and others)? You know you are a great chap, Walt? It's really a pity we live so far away, I wish I would have met you in person. I thanks BASE that got me meet really outstanding and cool people, mostly online (like you) but sometimes I succeeded in meeting in person these chaps, as Rick and Randy brothers (what oustanding blokes!!!), #460 himself, and few other. Please, keep on writing stories Thanks I am very humbled by that. Thankyou. I am no BASE hero, but I am very proud of those articles I wrote. I believe I was the first to post BASE "how to" articles on the internet and they are still out there to this day and much if the information continues to be standard practice. Much of the information in those articles came from Dan Doyle and Adam Filipino and their crew who took me under their wing and mentored me at Bridge Day 1988 and beyond. I have been thanked by some of the people who read those articles and told me they were quite sure their lives had been saved by the information they got from them. In the long run, I will be little more than a brief mention in the most minor of footnotes in BASE history, but that is a place I will very proudly occupy. 460 remains a very close friend. We talk nearly every day. I occasionally get to hang out with the Harrisons too. In fact after quietly retiring from BASE jumping years ago, 460 will be helping me get "back in black" very soon. I'm hoping to make it to your neighborhood (Brento) next year with Nick Bender and maybe the Harrisons and maybe even 460. I would be very honored to meet you, not as some sort of hero, but as a friend. I'll look forward to that. Walt

I believe I was the first to post BASE "how to" articles on the internet and they are still out there to this day and much if the information continues to be standard practice. Yes indeed. And even if my mentor was/is very, very experienced and showed me PRACTICALLY how to do things, your articles contributed A LOT to understand WHY a certain things was done/rigged like that and which the negative issues were. > In the long run, I will be little more than a brief mention in the most minor of footnotes in BASE history, but that is a place I will very proudly occupy. Yes indeed again. In my "BASE manual" (that in the end circulated among very few people in my group) you are mentioned as one of the sources. > 460 remains a very close friend. We talk nearly every day. Nice chap, Mr. 460. > I occasionally get to hang out with the Harrisons too. Say hello to Rick, Randy and Joy from me (=Andrea), please. > In fact after quietly retiring from BASE jumping years ago, 460 will be helping me get "back in black" very soon. If that is something you really desire, I wish you a very nice come back to BASE jumping!!! > I'm hoping to make it to your neighborhood (Brento) next year with Nick Bender and maybe the Harrisons and maybe even 460. Then, any of you must drop me a line well in advance, just to arrange things properly > I would be very honored to meet you, not as some sort of hero, but as a friend. I'll look forward to that. Now I explain the story of the "hero". Yes, you will come here and meet me and jump with me as a friend, indeed. But at the times, I saw you writing your articles as a hero, while a was a "skydiving wonder with 80 skydives or so", the same way I saw my mentor (#657) as a hero being just a student of him and seeing him "far away" at the time (I did my first BASE jump one year and a half later a read your article and met #657, just as info). At the time, I saw any experienced BASE jumper as a hero. Now that I am a joyfully experienced BASE jumper and jump regularly (even if not at a high rate) and have done jumps together with my mentor (at the moment out of the sport for his personal choice), and now that I do certain jumps that my mentor doesn't like to do, this does NOT mean that I consider yourself and/or my mentor as an asshole now that I can do the same things, it means that any "previous hero" has transformed into a sport mate, whom I do jump together and whom I do more or less the same things with. And this is a great thing, to be capable to do the sport together with someone you once considered as a myth, a hero. For me, a BASE hero is someone that at a certain stage of my life has been a "target" and/or an inspiration for the jumps he did. Possibly, I am myself a "hero" for the blokes (very few indeed) I have tought how to BASE jump and who have turned now as my BASE mates. I hope I have cleared the meaning of "hero" here Stay safe out there Blue Skies and Soft Walls BASE #689 - base_689AT_NO_123_SPAMyahoo.com
