steveorino 7 #1 January 23, 2006 Okay, my granddaughters are in AK (I'm in OK). I want to be able to see them more than once or twice a year. Can I purchase two webcams for me and my daughter's family and be able to talk to each other in somewhat real time? If so, what should I buy and what do I need besides the broadband hook up? steveOrino
CrazyIvan 0 #2 January 23, 2006 You will need only 2 webcams, one for you and one for your granddaughters, to connect, you can use NetMeeting, but to keep things simple, I would just install Yahoo Messenger. Broadband is a MUST for such things like this.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.
skymama 37 #3 January 23, 2006 The basic cameras like Logitech ones that they sell in Office supply stores will work fine and I agree that Yahoo Messenger works with them the easiest. If you can do basic stuff on the computer, you should be able to install it and make it work with no problem. Basically, if I can make it work, anyone can!She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
IanHarrop 42 #4 January 23, 2006 When buying web cameras make sure to think about microphones. Some cameras include them, some don't. You will need a microphone at each end as well, the cameras that come with microphones work well... unless you plan to use sign language over the video Edit to add: I do this web/video chat stuff with my Dad who is computer illiterate (he in Toronto and me in Calgary) and it works like a top!"Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy
waltappel 1 #5 January 23, 2006 I highly recommend the Micro Innovations PG088AA#ABA VGA Webcam with Integrated Microphone. The one I have carries the HP brand and is available at www.microcenter.com. Walt
steveorino 7 #6 February 22, 2006 I'm getting a lot of drop audio wit Logitec's own webcam service. Would I be better off switching to Yahoo messenger or MSN? steveOrino

Yahoo messenger is good but video quality is somewhat limited. I have, but don't use MSN. What I've found best for video and sound is Eyeball Chat, it has real time video without the 'freeze' effect you sometimes get with Yahoo and good quality audio as well. Most web cams will work well enough for video calls to family, naturally a mic and speakers (or headphones) are a must....The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...
