Tatu or Tatau, usually. You can find info here:

If you're considering a traditional tattoo, there can be significant risks:

http://tattoos.com/jane/steve/polynesia_today.htm

The Samoan ministry of health banned traditional tattoo tools, because they're so likely to transmit disease. Now they're using something similar to the prison style tattoo, made from electric shavers or walkman parts.

Some places do the "hammering" style of tattooing with a needle instead of the traditional bone or wood.

Oh, and random (though possibly not true) trivia: I've heard that the original word "tattoo" comes from the sound of the hammer on the nail. B|

Thanks for all the replies... I think the Polynesian-type stuff is what I was looking for. I didn't know about the risk of infection being worse than the modern type of tattoo, but I suppose that makes sense.

And I don't think that I know Marybeth, but I'll find her next time I'm at the dz...

That link to Black Wave tattoo had some interesting stuff, and some links to tattoo conventions that might be fun...

I can't say that I recommend Black Wave tattoo....I only mentioned them because I knew they did traditional tattooing there.

The main artist, Freewind, is the only one there who actually does traditional tattooing. And he's supposed to be VERY good - his portfolio is amazing - however, he kinda pissed me off because I made an appointment with him a month in advance and he totally flaked on me. The day of the appointment, the entire staff was late. While I was waiting (45 minutes) for Freewind to show, the other dude mentioned that they all went out drinking the previous night. Shortly thereafter Freewind called in "sick."

On top of that he didn't return my call to reschedule the appointment, so I ended up going elsewhere.

Oh, btw, I wasn't interested in traditional work for myself....just a good artist...modern equipment is fine by me. :)

Well what did you expect from a dude called "Freewind"? (Sorry, I just had to say that. :P)

I suspect that the tattoo industry is sort of like the skydiving industry and the people are going to be a bit more free-spirited (and therefore "flaky") than in some other businesses. I'd probably forgive the calling in sick with a hangover thing, but I would have gone somewhere else too if he never returned my call - that's not cool. I think it's important to have a good experience when getting a tattoo - to me, the experience is as important as the tattoo... which is one of the reasons I am considering having some traditional work done... and I would prefer to get to know the tattoo artist a bit beforehand...

Yeah, he really blew me off: First he was SOOOO busy he couldn't make an appointment. Call back in a month, they said. I called back in a month, and they scheduled me for a month later. Then he was too hung over to do it. I waited a week for him to call me back. Nothing. I called him. He was there, but too busy to take the call. I left a message and let a week pass. Nothing. I called one last time, left a final message, and after yet another week hunted down another artist.

But things ended up working out. I can say nothing but great things about Yvonne at Outer Limits Tattoo in Anaheim. She was super cool and I'm really happy with my tattoo. :)

I waited years before I saw artwork I would commit to forever. I went with Mom's Body Shop in the Haight in San Francisco. Ack, the artist is no longer there.

Never go with flash from the books, only go with original art, and pay for it. I have one large tattoo on my right bicep, and I like it. You're going to go with a local artist, so take the time to look at the artist's original art. If they are inclined towards wierd stuff you don't like, move on.

Have your first tattoo be somewhere you don't have to show an employer.

My first (and so far, only) tattoo is on my shoulder. While I like the look of tattoos, I'm not the type that enjoys drawing attention to myself, so I would probably never get a tattoo in a place that wasn't easy to cover up when I wanted to. I like the way they look on the back of the neck, but even that is too visible for me...

I think I want my next tattoo to be more about the experience, so I'd like to find an artist that I like and have them design something for me - just a simple but meaningful design, not really a picture of anything... and I think having it done the traditional way, preferably somewhere other than a tattoo parlor would be nice... with dudes in loincloths dancing around and chanting and, oh nevermind... :$
