Multispeed Suit

Recommended Posts

I tried to search a bit, but didn't come up with what I was looking for. I'm curious if anyone has some first hand experience with multi-speed suits, especially the "Big Boys". I'm looking to buy a jumpsuit in the near future. I'm 6'2" at 225 lbs 255 lbs with gear.

Don't hold me to the numbers on my neptune, but my average speed falling in a column of air with a relaxed arch was roughly 143 mph. The suit I was wearing is baggy around the legs and arms but pretty tight around the waist/torso/chest area. I was able to slow that down to 114 mph, but I was in a very exaggerated position.

My jumps on a much bigger jumpsuit yielded a relaxed arch fall rate of 120. I didn't get to try and slow it down any during the jump.

I want to be able to fly decent on my belly, but RW just isn't a Discipline I would like to pursue at the moment. After I'm decent on my belly, I would like to progress to Free Flying. My instructor suggested I buy a freefly suit and don't worry about getting a multi-speed. I don't question his judgement one bit, I would just like some more views on it. I'm a fairly impulsive person, so when randomly jump on something its really hard for me to break away from it :S. Anyways, I'm just looking for the flexibility to fall fast and real slow. Thanks!

I've encountered the same problem my self. I'm almost the same exitweight as you, but i'm 5'8"

There are two options that worked for me to reduce my speed on belly. A cheap overall(the kind used at car repairshop or similar) or a camerasuit. I did some 20 jumps to try and reduce my speed and be able to function as a cameraman with my ff suit. I learned a lot an would recommend you to do the same. But for the real thing, you need large wings and a cotton-front suit if you want to fall slow and keep on level with skinny people in RW/Students/and everything from a 4-way and larger. I've even used my fast camerasuit for a 2-way RW jump. otherwise i couldn't keep track with the other guy.

Keep in mind that if you really want to learn how to fall slow on your belly, just start doing hundreds of RW jumps. The same is for FF. The suit don't fly you, you need to fly your body. The suit only helps a little.

I was jumping with just shorts, shoes rig and helmet once...reached almost 160mph in a normal boxposition, and almost 165 when i put my arms on my chest and arched a little more...I "normally" fall 10-15mph faster the average in a normal boxposition. :)

Get a baggy freefly suit and use it for everything. I use my freefly suit for belly and freefly and it works fine. I have a couple RW suits but I only whip them out when I know the dive will be fast enough. The fact that you can change your belly speed 30mph during one jump (although I don't know how much stock to put in Neptune data) means you are probably fairly comfortable with fall rate control. Just try to find a freefly suit that will put your relaxed fall rate somewhere around 120.

I _ think_ you answered your own question.
You have a great resource for information right at your home DZ - talk to AggieDave.

Thanks for the responses.

BIGUN:
He was the instructor I previously spoke with. It was his baggy jumpsuit that put me at 120 ;).

lilchief:
Thanks for the info, 160 mph :o.

DanG:
You said pretty much what my instructor recommended. I may just get a baggy freefly suit and go from there.
