waltappel 1 #1 February 20, 2006 I'm getting a long overdue eye exam today and want to try contacts. They scare me bad. I just don't like the idea of poking myself in the eye. Any hot tips? Walt
NWFlyer 2 #2 February 20, 2006 I'm sure you'll get good tips here but I'm willing to bet that the eye doctor you're visiting could help as well. Oh, and Frenchy68's medical forum, too. And isn't peregrinerose an eye doc? Might PM her."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. narcimund 0 #6 February 20, 2006 QuoteI just don't like the idea of poking myself in the eye. One doesn't "poke themselves in the eye." One carefully positions the contact lens near the eye and lets the edge touch the surface. Then the surface tension draws the contact lens onto the eye. If you poke (i.e., actually press the finger onto the eyeball) the lens won't transfer. First Class Citizen Twice Over

I don't wear contacts, but I put on a little perfume one day, apparently got a bit on my finger, then went to brush an eyelash out of my eye. It was, let's just say, a tearful experience. twibbles 0 #8 February 20, 2006 After cutting lemon too.. Lemon in the eye is bad. Once you get used to putting contact lenses on, it's very easy. Just remember to wash your hands before putting them on. Once i was having tabasco with my pasta, and... Eugene . "In the beginning the Universe was created. faulknerwn 38 #11 February 20, 2006 Its not bad at all once you get used to it. I used contacts for years until I had Lasik... But it does suck losing one skydiving and flying in on one eye :-)
squink 0 #12 February 20, 2006 In my personal opinion. Dailies are the best for your eyes. They are the most expensive, but they are light and breathable. I used to get them from my eye doctor for $500/year. I now get them at Costco for $250/year. If you don't wear them everyday, they'll last you a long time. Super simple too, no cleaning or sanitizing, put them in, then throw them away at the end of the day. In terms of putting them in, if you have big hands, good luck. My Dad has been wearing contacts for 4 or 5 years now, and it's easy for him to put them in. BUT... in the beginning I felt so bad for him, watching him poke his big fingers at his eye. It WILL get easier though. This is my opinion, I have worn contacts for about 10 years. ...the door was open SKYDIVERGIRLS.COM
windcatcher 0 #13 February 20, 2006 Just relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaxIt's natural for your eye to want to close when you first put in contacts, so just relax when you try it. Contacts are wonderful. ( just don't ever sleep with em in, wake up, try and find one of em that you thought fell out, and later find it in your eye) Mother to the cutest little thing in the world... Nightingale 0 #14 February 20, 2006 There's a brand new lens out called Bio-Curve. It's just slightly more rigid than a standard soft lens, and it's much better for your eyes. It works better when staring at the computer for hours, and it slows down the speed of changing prescriptions. Costs about the same as regular soft lenses. Keith 0 #15 February 20, 2006 Be careful to remember which contact you've already removed when taking them out when you're drunk so you don't try to take the same one out twice. Keith Don't Fuck with me Keith - J. Mandeville
Nightingale 0 #16 February 20, 2006 QuoteIts not bad at all once you get used to it. I used contacts for years until I had Lasik... But it does suck losing one skydiving and flying in on one eye :-) I had the worst landing of my life because of a missing lens. Sunset load, we'd already had a go-around, so it was getting dark, but not too bad. I lost a lens on exit (tube dive) and when the tube broke and I went to check altitude, I found I couldn't read my altimeter. Had no idea how high I was, and didn't want to risk getting unstable to try to look at the alti with the other eye (I had 29 jumps). I saw the person I was jumping with way below me, and we were last out, so I just pulled. At about 8K. Had a long canopy ride, and landed in the dark with no depth perception because I could only see out of one eye. Flared about 30 feet too high. Realized it and let up, but had no momentum left to flare again. Got some of the worst bruises I'd ever had in my life (and after 17 years of karate classes, that's saying something)/. Walked away, and vowed to never jump with new goggles until I'd tested them in front of a fan (if you can feel a breeze across your eyes, you'll probably lose a lens)

Walt I used to have the same fear - its a bit of a pain at first - but I love my contacts now. They make a lot of things much easier. Now its easy to pop them in and yank them out - no eye poking required.Scars remind us that the past is real
Broke 0 #18 February 20, 2006 Keep your eyes open, and resist the temptation to blink. No shit the first time I put in contacts by myself it took me like 8 hours to get the pair in. Eye open put a drop of saline in them, and hold your lids. Hopefully I won't have to deal with those too much longer though. Rebecca 0 #19 February 20, 2006 I used to teach people to insert contacts for the first time. If you have a really hard time with the finger-eye thing, I suggest practice: wash your hands (ALWAYS!!!), get in front of the mirror, and with your middle finger gently tug your lower eyelid down (a wee bit, not much), and just touch your eyeball below the iris with your index finger. No poking, just a gentle whisper touch. Do this with both eyes until it's not scary. Watch your finger in the mirror, not in front of you. Once you get used to the fact that you can do this and it won't hurt, introduce the contact. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? brierebecca 0 #20 February 20, 2006 QuoteI had the worst landing of my life because of a missing lens. Me too! I'm very blind (9 diopter correction), and I lost the contact in my dominant eye during a skydive. With no depth perception, I overshot the landing area and did a swan dive on the tarmac. Thankfully I lifted my hands and my head, so the only damage I sustained was a banged-up knee and a ripped jumpsuit. Brie"Ive seen you hump air, hump the floor of the plane, and hump legs. Nightingale 0 #23 February 20, 2006 Always put in and take out a certain lens first...
