uh, if a server "just" brought my food from the kitchen and did nothing else, they would get nothing or close to it. (depending on the place obviously) See, servers get no respect and I hate that. Like many things in life, easy to do but hard to master, ya know? Great service is hard to come by.

dude, you're talking (or typing?) to the last person on earth who would be disrespectful about how hard serving really is. I just used it as an analogy for tipping pizza guys.

obviously NONE of you have worked in the restaurant......I am a server, but because of my broken leg, they have me in the to-go room.
I make 5.50 an hour plus TIPS.....on average I have made about 20 dollars in tips for a five hour shift.
The to-go people actually put you food together for take out....and we deliver to the vehicle....rain or shine......so yes you should tip!!!!!!!
and just FYI, if you have been going there for two years.......these people know you......and trust me....they don't think of you kindly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you can't tip.........don't go out to eat!!!!!!!!!!
You make the minimum wage for a job that takes that amount of skill. I don't tip at McDonalds, and ocationally they need to walk your order out to your car. Servers make less than you make, so what you are saying is you should be paid more for what you do than the servers?
So, what does everyone else do?
Usually I tip the standard amount, because the server puts the order together and because it takes up time just like everything else s/he does.
Sometimes--however--if I get in the direct path of an attitude, I don't.
I once had one of the servers at the local bar allow my burger to sit and get cold (she told me she would be with me in a minute, and then she kept counting her tip money), so I didn't tip her (I saved a buck, but my burger was still unpleasant).
Other than that, I tip.
Edited to add: If you order take-out regularly, the servers will remember you, and you'll do a lot better as a tipper than not. Especially at your local ethnic restaurant where it's usually a family affair.

no way....pistols at dawn!

I got you.....I just wish I was a server in europe while I waited tables. You know, where it's looked at as an honorable profession, not a haven for actor wannabees.

and yeah, I could tell from your previous post that you were a server. still servers don't just sling food. well, I never did. *adjusts pipe in mouth*

Where is my fizzy-lifting drink?
The exception was a couple weeks ago, when the guy held the take-out open five extra minutes so I could get some late-night food. I gave him a $5 tip. He kept my credit card. Next day there was $3300 in charges on the card.
